A TREASURE HOUSE OF BOOKS : THE LIBRARY OF DUKE AUGUST OF BRUNSWICK-WOLFENBÜTTEL

The Grolier Club is in many ways the ideal American venue for "A
Treasure-House of Books: The Library of Duke August of
Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel". The Grolier has a long history of land
mark exhibitions on books and the book arts, and this reputation
as well as the Club's location, helps ensure a high public profile and
an appreciative audience for these treasures, many of which are
being shown in the United States for the first time. But a more
important factor, perhaps, is the nature of the Grolier Club itself
and specifically the mission it shares with its German cousin. For
like the Herzog August Bibliothek, the focus of the Grolier Club i
two-fold: book and collector.

Founded in 1884, the object of the Grolier Club, according to
our Constitution, is "the literary study and promotion of the arts
pertaining to the production of books," and in our 115-year histor
we have done our best to foster interest in these arts through our
publications, our public exhibitions, and our Library. These are the
pillars on which the Club stands, and in all three endeavors the
book is central, whether as text, object of beauty, or historical
evidence

The Club's founders intended the Club to lead by example in
promoting the book arts, and in our long and distinguished series
of publications we have tried to celebrate-with the help of notables
such as Geoffrey Keynes and Kurt Bühler, Walter Gilliss and the
Gilliss Press, Joseph Blumenthal and the Spiral Press, Bruce Rogers
and many others - the best America has to offer in scholarship,
printing, and book design.

With our first public exhibition in 1884 the Grolier Club introduced
to America the then-revolutionary idea that books could be
