Enmity between two competing ninja clans - famous Kouga and Iga - comes to a culmination when Ieyasu Tokugawa decides to use them as avatars for his own family feuding groups. Goal is simple - ten warriors from each clan will fight it out and surviving clan will have a secure contract with respective Tokugawa's family group (as they say for 1000 years). Of course it is not necessary to say what will happen with the losing team - most probably wiped out by winning team to the last men, women and child.

And thus starts our story. In the middle of this - lets call it tournament - we have a couple (like in all tragedies they come from opposing families) that tries through love to join the clans. But with all of the century old grudges this looks like an impossible mission (especially touching was the first chapter involving two old masters of the opposing clans as they leave the meeting Tokugawa).

Ninjas in this story are not your historical ninjas but supernatural warriors with incredible skills. In that regard story reminds of Chinese wuxia. Action is non-stop but I especially liked approach to the characters and plotting. The way how clans gain edge over the others is just great twist. And what I found very interesting is that in this clan to clan warfare people die and they dont return. Volume #1 starts with the bang, puts us directly in the center of the conflict and ends with quite the cliffhanger. I didn't have a straight forward favorite here, because these are assassin clans doing some pretty nasty stuff for people in power and ready to do whatever is necessary to defeat the other competitors. Characters are very good, their motives and stands more than clear. I am truly looking for the next volume in the series.

Recommended to fans of Japanese ninja mythology and manga.

Second volume finally starts to even the odds between Iga and Kouga a bit - especially after the rather uneven casualties from the first book.

And, as expected major hit was to the relationship between Oboro and Gennosuke. Both unaware of the developments - Oboro because she was kept in dark by her clansmen and Gennosuke because he literally had no idea - they will very soon come to a major turning point. And when that happens it si clear that their love will be put to the serious test.

Art as in volume #1 is great. Great level of details and even when so many weird supernatural things occur on a panel reader is not lost. One character though (Okoi from Kouga) was somehow out of place here. She just seems a little bit off with ducky lips and voluptuous beyond belief. But that is the only comment I have so far.

Highly recommended to fans of Japanese ninja mythology and manga.

The battle between the Iga and Kouga clans continues, leaving only 5 ninjas left by the end of this volume (out of ten per side that started out). A noble lady decides to meddle, which could make things interesting. Once again, the pace on this one moves along very fast. One of the things I am noticing in this series is the amount of detail. I may reread the series soon just to appreciate it some more. Oh, and in this volume, did that last ninja to die, Tenzen, actually die? Seems a shapeshifter is involved. Maybe instead of 5, there may still be 6 ninja left. Another cool thing about this series is that the ninjas all have different techniques and powers from the shapeshifter to the woman who can stop any ninja technique with just her vision. This is a nice blend of fantasy and action. Well worth the reading, and I am heading along to read volume 5 to find out how it all ends.… (meer)

Wow. This great series comes to an end. I won't spoil much, but I will say that it ends like a classic Greek tragedy (if you know that genre, then you know what happens). The fight comes down to the last three ninja for each clan, but one of the sides has someone interfering. The action moves very fast; pace is quick, and I read this pretty much in one evening. Then it comes down to the final showdown, which in a way can be a bit reminiscent of other classic showdowns (think for instance, the cemetery scene at the end of The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly, or with a bit of the pathos of the end of Kill Bill films. This has been one of the best manga series I have read, and it moves so fast that I know I just have to reread it again soon to catch one or two of the details I may have missed. If you like action, ninjas, some violence, and a bit of the magical thrown in, then you have to read this. I cannot recommend this enough.… (meer)
