Korte biografie
Zoa Sherburne was born in Seattle and raised in Ballard, Washington. She began writing while in elementary school. In 1940, she published a column of light version in the Ballard Tribune. She entered a limerick-writing contest on the radio and won the $250 first prize, which she invested in a course on short story writing. Over the next 15 years, she published more than 300 short stories in national magazines such as Women's Day, Seventeen, Collier's and others.

She then began writing books, and produced 13 novels for children and young adults. All of her fiction featured young girls in some kind of crisis. One of them, Stranger in the House (1971), was adapted into a movie for television. She and her husband of 30 years, Herbert Sherburne, had eight children. At age 65, she completed work for a GED certificate and attended Western Washington University.

This is an extremely moving story about the stresses in a family when the mother returns from nine years in a psychiatic hospital. The news should bring the greatest joy, but in fact she is a stranger to her children and it is a struggle to build a relationship with them, especially her way teenage daughter Kathy, who narrates the story. I have read it several times.

Jennifer's family happily takes one of those infamous mid-20th-century corporate executive transfers and lets Boeing move them from New York City to small-town Washington state, hoping to leave their past behind them - the death of Jennifer's twin and her mother's alcoholism have almost destroyed the family. Now Mrs Martin is in AA and taking life one day at at time, but Jennifer is terrified that life is going to return to what it was. This complicates her attempts to adjust to life in a new high school, make friends, and socialize.… (meer)
