It is an ok book, but not really worth the time to read, unfortunately. Essentially it is a short story, stretched out to the length of a novel. I would suggest spending your time on something more rewarding.
Bonus point because I love Russian culture clashes and this is the first novel I've ever read set in Harbin.
This is pretty good, but honestly, the real story of this pandemic (in Harbin, Manchuria, and elsewhere) is actually even more intriguing and fascinating and horrifying. After finishing this novel tonight, I spent the subsequent 45 minutes reading all about the third plague pandemic, of which this was a piece. (Which by the way the WHO identifies as lasting until 1960! Can you believe that?)
Recommended if you are looking for pandemic fiction right now -- which some of us are, to try to understand the human experience through fiction, and some of us aren't, because we just can't handle it. Either way is ok.… (meer)

Loved the beginning...really good writing...but it turned dark and I could not stay with it.
The idea is great, and the first few chapters allow intrigue, but then the book falls apart at the seams. Overall, this was a very disappointing experience. I was not able to connect with any of the characters and the writing style was virtually stagnant throughout it's duration. I was expecting something much better judging by the reviews of the famous outlets listed on the book itself. I would not recommend it; the experience was not a joyful one.
