This book is about how baby penguins are born and who takes care of them. There is an emperor penguin and he leaves when the family starts. The mother lays the eggs and gives them to the dad to keep warm. The dad cares for the baby when he hatches and helps keep him warm. Until the baby is feed enough and grow enough from the food he cannot swim. He must grow to get feathers so they he will swim in the icy cold waters.
I likes this book because it is all informative. The book gives very simply facts that a child will retain. This information can be built on and that is a great start for learning. The book taught me facts that the dad keeps the egg between the tummy and the feet not in the pouch. The pictures were realistic instead of hand drawn cartoon like.
An extension could be a "did you know" fact. Such as, a funny fact that would grab children’s attention. Another extension could be some of the predators that penguins encounter on land and in the sea. It could also show how the animal defends itself against the predator.

This book is informative and full of great places to visit for Civil War buffs like myself. I take it with me on all my road trips so I can plan stops along the way, or even just stop on a whim! I've checked off the places I've visited as well as use it to learn about places I want to visit!
