I liked the cover so I picked this book. It was surprising and interesting. I really liked it.

This book was captivating from the first page to the last.
I loved learning about the Threck and the Hynka. Their cultures were not just skin-deep, but filled with interesting nuances and quirks. One of the best tests of a sci-fi novel is how well the alien species are crafted; they exceed expectations in Exigency.
Also, the book is very character driven, and each character is very much set apart from the others. No one-size-fits-all characterization here.

One-dimensional characters, a shallow story, and glaring inconsistencies all combine to ruin what was a potentially interesting premise.
