T.C. Smout is Emeritus Professor of Scottish History at the University of St Andrews and Historiographer Royal for Scotland. He became an environmental historian in the 1980s and in 1999 was invited to deliver the Ford Lectures in Oxford, published later by Edinburgh University Press as Nature toon meer Contested: Environmental History in Scotland and Northern England since 1600. He has also written extensively on woodlands history, most recently a History or the Native Woodlands of Scotland, 1500-1920 with Alan R. MacDonald and Fiona Watson (Edinburgh University Press, 2005). His earlier works on Scottish social history, The History of the Scottish People, 1560-1830 (1969) and A Century of the Scottish People, 1830-1950 (1986), are regarded as classics. toon minder
