Even after half a century remains highly informative, with finely balanced proportions of social, political, economic and cultural history. (Also a good reminder that whatever the drawbacks of the modern era, one shouldn't idealise the past.)

Very nice volume acquired by father who was good at buying history books. This history book uses only intext citations and references, but has a number of charts. The author, Smout is professor of Scottish History at the University of St Andrews.

A very good overview of life in Scotland from 1830-1950. Not only does it follow the more famous events and people but it also describes the life of highlanders, tenement dwellers, the poor and the middle class. Topics covered included religion, work, relationships, travel, recreation, rural living, etc.

Detailed, worthy academic textbook, but not written in an engaging style.
