Korte biografie
Suzanne Marie Adele Beauclerk, née Fesq, was born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to French-speaking parents who were part of the British Empire. When she was a year old, her family moved to Mas Mistral, a farmhouse near Vence in southern France. She later described an idyllic childhood in which she roamed the grounds, observing the abundant wildlife and participating in the annual treading of the grapes. The family went back to Malaysia when her father resumed management of the Assam Java Plantation at Selangor. Suzanne learned to speak English, and after a year at a boarding school in Paris, attended Rosemead School in England. During World War II, she served with the Psychological Warfare Branch of the British Foreign Office. She worked as a news writer in North Africa and Italy before being transferred in 1945 to Vienna. There her commanding officer was Colonel Charles Frederick Beauclerk, the future 13th Duke of St. Albans, whom she married in 1947 after a divorce from his first wife. The couple had five children. Suzanne had taken painting lessons in Rome and had her works exhibited at the Royal Academy. Between 1967 and 1972, she and the duke ran the Upper Grosvenor Gallery in Mayfair. She also was a vice-president of the British armed forces charity SSAFA and a top fundraiser for the Red Cross. She wrote three volumes of her autobiography, including Paradise and Pestilence: Aspects of Provence (1997), about renovating her parents' long-neglected house and property at Mas Mistral and the geography and history of the region. A single volume version was published in 2000 as Mango and Mimosa.

This book (1983) is categorized by the publisher under RELIGION/BIOGRAPHY/PARAPSYCHOLOGY AND THE OCCULT. It purports to be a collection of stories about Padre Pio but often delves into cult-like hero worship.
The B&W photos in this book are interesting and the only thing worth browsing, to me.
I would not recommend this for Roman Catholic reading since it often gives bizarre explanations for very ordinary situations. This is the first book I've read about Padre Pio and will surely read more recently published accounts of events in his life that are cross referenced and documented.
Padre Pio, a stigmatist, was canonized by John Paul II in 2002. Padre Pio is probably the costuming model for Star Wars' Obi Wan Kenobi. Yoda also wears a Franciscan style habit.

Delightful little book, I don't know how Slightly Foxed manage to find so many charming memoirs. It makes me feel a bit itchy when I read about the menagerie that occupied the rafters and the risk of snakes on the bannisters. Mine is no. 986 of 20000.

I really enjoyed the first two parts of this book, but felt that it lost its way in the third part, which dealt with the years during the second year war.

The early sections, describing the author's somewhat haphazard upbringing in France and Malaya was entertaining and an interesting insight into life at the time for a family with their wealth. The final part of the book described the author's experiences working in one of the propaganda sections of the allied army during the war. To me, this sounds like it should have been fascinating, and I was therefore disappointed with the superficial and disjointed description of this time.

All in all, an entertaining enough read, but not good enough for me to actively seek out other books by the same author.
