This was a very enjoyable prequel to the Kubu series. It shows the insecurities Kubu felt both as a young investigator and a junior romantic. He learns quickly from his boss, Assistant Superintendent Mabaku, honing his investigative skills as they look into murders both in the past and current day. It’s a shame for Kubu that he doesn’t have an equally-proficient romance tutor as he fearfully questions every aspect of his relationship with his future wife, Joy.
