I did enjoy some of this book but was left at the end confused and disappointed. While a fun read, there were too many problems for me to recommend this book to anyone. It seemed like the book had a lot of potential it didn't live up to, maybe due to the authors inexperience or lack of a good editor. Possibly a problem with my kindle edition but the editing was poor, particularly transitions in POV. Several times I had to back up and re-read a section to understand what had happened. I also could not buy into the way the main character was presented as naive, misguided, but not really a bad person. To have accomplished what he did, and to take the specific steps he did, it is impossible to believe he didn't understand the negative consequences of his actions on the people around him, and the harm he could be causing. The religious aspects of the book were unclear and poorly executed. In parts it seemed God was an active force in the book, but the main character was left untouched. If the author's intention was for us to consider what was real and what was not, the result was merely confusing and not thought provoking. In the end even a farce or satire must have some impact on the characters, but I was left I unsatisfied. What had changed? How were the characters impacted by the events in the book? I felt the author couldn't decide what he wanted the book to be, or was trying to force it to be a certain style, at the expense of what could have been a very interesting story. Unless our conclusion is supposed to be that religion is completely meaningless and nothing we do matters as long as we are nice even when we deceive people, then maybe he succeeded and I missed the bigger picture.… (meer)

The premise of Left Behind gets stood on it's head in this satire that tackles Christian's beliefs about the rapture and the end times. It seems that in Goodland, Kansas (why did he pick Goodland?) they believe that they will be the first to be raptured. So when a local school age boy from the Henderson family has a vision in a cornfield that details how "the end" is near he finds a ready made audience willing to believe him. Then the first of his three signs is mysteriously fulfilled and things really start to go crazy. This book tries to be as much about a family's struggle to stay connected as it is a satire of Apocalyptic fervor, however it is the satire that is it's strong point. The characters are kind of flat and unremarkable. For Christians who get satire or who have a dark sense of humor this book will be enjoyable. Unfortunately, the story and characters are not quite good enough to interest readers who aren't into the satire, so unless this kind of humor sounds like your cup of tea I'd caution you against this book.… (meer)

I am a big fan of mainstream horror, suspense, so when I was given the opportunity to review "Homemade Haunting" by Rob Stennett the title intrigued me, and the cover had me wondering what it was all about, but what I found inside the covers of the book was what really held my attention!

Charlie Walker lost his faith in God at the age of seven when God failed to answer his prayers to save his mother who was dying of cancer. Now thirty years later when Charlie is asked by his wife Rachel what he would like for his birthday, the answer he gives is that he would like to quit his job as a high school English teacher for six months so he can write a best selling horror novel. When she agrees they sell their home and find a cheap rental in Castle Rock. As he starts to write the first few chapters come easy, but then nothing, and he comes to realize that he can't possibly write about something he knows nothing about, so he decides to dabble in the supernatural for inspiration. His first foray into the supernatural is buying and using a Ouija board, which seems to work because the chapters are flowing again, but he is also experiencing some weird things in the house. When he confides in his wife about what he has been doing she jumps on board with him and soon she seems almost obsessed with the paranormal. It soon becomes a battle of spiritual warfare, and when Charlie's guardian angel shows up and allows him to see the demons that are wreaking havoc on his family, Charlie does the only thing he can do, he turns to God to save his family!

I really enjoyed this book! While this book deals with the topic of paranomal and "demons" the author writes it in such a way that it isn't really scary, he actually weaves alot of quirky humor into the story.I loved the footnotes peppered throughout the story and found myself reading them first thing when I found them on the page, and acutally had to laugh about the refrence to The Ghost Hunters on Sci-Fi, because its a show I watch regularly!
The thing that really jumped out at me throughout the story is just how easy it is to allow darkness into our lives, and once its there its not always so easy to get rid of. I found it very refreshing that I could read a story about the supernatural that also has a spiritual message woven in.

A complimentary copy of this book was provided by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

The End Is Now by Rob Stennett centers around a few days in the life of the Henderson family, an all-American family of four (Jeff, Amy, Emily, and fifth-grader Will) who live in a small town in Kansas. Will has what he believes is a word from God saying that the rapture will occur soon. Part of the town, and part of the Henderson family, believe that this is true, while the other half believe that Will is at best imagining things and at worst, lying and causing trouble for the town. Passions spiral out of control as people are caught up in the events. The story is an off-the-wall tale which is both humorous and sad; it is about life and families and love and God and religion and human foibles and more. I laughed out loud many times when reading the story.

For anyone who thinks the story ends abruptly, I will give you a hint -- turn a few pages because the end is not always THE END. Thoroughly enjoyable, well written, funny, and thought provoking.
