Lacy lives in a world of magic - black and white. She is pulled between her mother (who is scarily powerful at times) and her stepmother (who quietly encourages a more peaceful and loving way of life) - between who she wants to be and who she is afraid she really is. The novel is full of stuff that takes the reader past the edge of reality, and yet is very real in the sense of that journey to figure out oneself.
