The Taylor's Guides are excellent references to plants for particular uses or categories of plants. They are references, not really books to read. Lots of pictures, lots of plant listings, and some advice on how to grow plants in shade.

I would love to have a rose garden again, but now, just dreaming of one I can enjoy these lovely pictures. Planting tips on growing, uses for each rose and sidebars on general tips for growing roses

This is a great book -- but not a quick reference: You must read well into the description of a plant to find out if it's shade or sun lover. It's not something you can quickly discern.
Also missing is the distance needed between plants which is so helpful when developing a bed and purchasing more than one of each kind.
