A book on the creation of a public image of a professional soldier, and how inconvenient facts can be suppressed for the good of the cause. Montgomery was fortunate to be in charge when the western Allies rearmament program began to surpass the German one. It also discusses the question of in WWII, how much was general, and how much was his staff?

A technical study of the last campaign in Europe and its conduct. The prickly character and military politics are clearly laid out. Monty would change but never wanted to be found as having done so. He was too rigid a character to be an attractive biographical subject, and his mistakes cost too many lives.
