Surprising Mystics door Herbert (edited By J. H. Crehan) Thurston
Covers various false mystics as well as approved mystics. A good approach for learning discernment, yet due to its date, one mystic mentioned is now obviously approved: St. Padre Pio! However, the book is more than a description of the lives of various mystics; it is a teaching tool for anyone desiring a grounding in mystical phenomenon and in the effects of mystical experiences in persons. At times it seemed a bit conciliatory in tone, but the author is noted as an expert in "spiritualism" so rampant in the early 20th century, and no doubt he'd have a hey-dey with the new age proponents today! The bulk of the case studies were fascinating, including the sorrowful cases of those overcome by hysteria and thus, not true mystics, yet not intending to deceive.… (meer)

gentlemania | Jan 4, 2008 | 3975. Surprising Mystics, by Herbert Thurston, S. J., edited by J. H. Crehan, S. J. (read 17 Jan 2005) This book is a compilation of Father Thurston's articles, published in The Month in the 1920s and 1930s, on mystics (none of whom have been canonized) and though he died in 1939 this book was not published till 1955. Each article is of interest, and I found the book well worth reading, telling of amazing people's experiences.
