Nancy Ludlow Tuckerman was born in Manhattan, New York on October 24, 1928. She and Jacqueline Bouvier were friends at the Chapin School in Manhattan and roommates at Miss Porter's School. Tuckerman had been working as a travel agent in New York City for about 10 years when her friend Jacqueline toon meer Kennedy, now the first lady, asked her to become her social secretary in the spring of 1963. After President John F. Kennedy's assignation, Tuckerman continued to act as a spokeswoman for Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and the Kennedy family until Kennedy Onassis's death in 1994. Tuckerman worked in public relations with Olympic Airways and then became a book editor at Doubleday in 1975. In 1995, she and Nancy Dunnan updated The Amy Vanderbilt Complete Book of Etiquette, which had not been revised since 1978.
