The illustrations in this story depict the lives of ancient Hawaiians. Although there is some violence with Maui beating the suns' legs until it crosses the sky more slowly it is a good story about the god Maui and is easy for young children to relate to.
"How Maui Slowed the Sun" by Suelyn Ching Tune tells the common Hawaiian legend of how a young boy named Maui was fed up with days being so short. He roped the sun and made it move slower across the Earth, making the days longer. In this rendition of the story, Maui is a very relateable character for younger kids. He is frustrated about the sun moving so quickly because he just wants to play longer. Younger children can, of course, relate to this.
Because of the engaging pictures, this book would peak student's interest. It is a great version of this story for younger children. It includes repition and a slow, climatic build. Students would enjoy Maui's love for playing and his questioning attitude.… (meer)
