- Marie Tyl was a Frenchwoman married in 1902 to a military officer with whom she had three children. Her husband died in Africa in 1906, and Marie lived for many years in Cherbourg. She kept a diary throughout her life, and continued during both world wars. The part concerning the First World War was published in 2015 as Journal de guerre - Cherbourg, 1914-1919. The part about World War II was published as Les indésirables, Journal de guerre écrit à cherbourg 1939-1945 in 2016. Marie Tyl was a royalist and fierce opponent of the French Republic, but also deeply patriotic, and her political convictions and observations about the presence of "undesirables" under the German Occupation form the center of interest of that book.
