The Prosecutor and the Prey: Vyshinsky and the… door Arkady Vaksberg
Trenchant biography of one of the 20th century's least sympathetic figures, Andrei Vyshinsky, who was the prosecutor at many of the Moscow Show Trials of the 1930s. The author apparently had access to certain files during the brief window of opportunity in the late 1980s and early 1990s (the book came out in 1990) to examine Vyshinky's own files. It paints a picture of a bully and coward, and one that rose to the top of the legal profession in Stalinist Russia on the bodies of thousands. Even the most evil of men must have lieutenants willing to carry out their orders. Vyshinsky was that and more for Stalin. A piece of Soviet history doomed to be forgotten, except by Russians.
