Korte biografie
Veit Valentin was one of the few liberal historians in Germany before 1945. His political views, in a profession characterized by nationalism and reaction, led to his virtual exclusion from teaching. Nevertheless he made major contributions to German history. With the rise of Hitler, Valentin emigrated to London. His citizenship was revoked in 1939, and he moved to Washington, D.C. in 1940, where he lived and worked until his death.

Besprekingen

A rather romantic, patriotic history of the Germans by a professor from Frankfurt who was run off by the Nazi regime in the '30s. Follows the Meinecke tradition of writing about the "German spirit" as if it were a historical actor. First published in German in 1946. The translation is obviously by a native German speaker.
