I liked this book for two reasons. First, I liked how the books text features enhance the context. The headings on each page are in different colors, and the subheadings are in a fun font that grabs the reader’s attention. Typically, it is easy for informational books to be boring because of the overload of information children may find unappealing and useless. I felt that this book made the information exciting, though. Each page features a “Did You Know?” section that includes valuable information about Labor Day. This information could have easily been written along with the rest of the text in paragraph form, but the author chose to give the info its own section on each page to grab the reader’s attention and intrigue the reader. I also liked this book because of the language the author used; specifically the language that the author chose to write in bold print. All words that are bolded are ones that children could easily not initially understand, such as: annual, working class, and strikes. The bolded words would be useful for a teacher reading this book with a class because the bolding of the words could remind the teacher when it is necessary to pause, identify, and explain each challenging word as they appear in the book.
