Well done crime novel about the kidnapping of a six year old boy. The ending was very tense and well written, and I couldn’t stop reading. Yes, the writing style could be a little stiff, but it didn’t keep me from enjoying this little known classic.

It’s an old pulp story from Black Mask in 1933. Detective investigates threats against a bank executive. The banks is on the rocks, and so there are lots of people who stand to lose money because of the guy. Lots of people with reason to threaten or off him. Gangsters get involved. Explosions! A complicit woman! Wisecracks! And a really good reading by gravelly voiced James Naughton.

I had to stop reading this for a few days because the leading character, a subway cop, had such a neanderthal attitude toward women, gays, etc., but I guess that was just Walsh's way of letting him redeem himself, at least on the female front. Still, even for 1964, his attitude when confronted with his girlfriend's dark past, seemed extreme. Once I got back to the book, it carried me through to the end however. The villain is interesting and the final chase through the subway is very well done. It's time I read one the books Walsh won awards for to see if he gets any better. After reading this and The Dark Window, he isn't rising to the top of my list!… (meer)

Atmospheric and somewhat reminiscent of Ambler, but not as intricate or intellectual. The central character of an ex-Police officer who has lost his nerve and is now working as a security officer in a swank hotel is not as interesting as the rest of the characters and the plot machinations surrounding a Bishop who has escaped from an Iron Curtain prison and has come to America, where a large sum of money has been collected for his cause. The shady characters trying to get the money for themselves are much more entertaining.… (meer)
