matthew watkins: secrets of creation volume three: prime numbers, quantum physics and a journey to the centre of your mind (2013-5). livro de divulgação científica, explorando a relação entre números primos, física quântica e o caos determinista, a partir da função zeta de riemann (explicada no volume anterior). é o mais fraco dos 3 volumes ao meu ver, por ser menos matemático e gastar muito tempo considerando a admiração e perplexidade de cientistas e matemáticos acerca do tema. o interessante tema dos números como “arquétipo da ordem” é finalmente abordado, mas eu gostaria de algo mais ousado e menos sugestivo. continua a explicar coisas complexas sem usar matemática, de um modo maravilhosamente simples. uma coisa que aprendi, interessante: existe o campo da física denominada semi-clássica, que trabalha com a ideia de usar constantes discretas “quânticas” com o tamanho tendendo a zero, aproximando assim o sistema de um contínuo “clássico”.… (meer)

Secrets of Creation: Prime Numbers, Quantum Physics… door Matthew Watkins

This book series offers fantastic insights into the mysteries of prime numbers! Having read many books on the subject I can say that this book series has a very visual interpretation of the prime numbers and many of the theories and practices that are being used to find the mysteries behind them. All in all I would very much recommend this series to anyone interested in knowing more about their mysteries!

Oh, boy! What a great little book! Five years of high school and college math crammed into 58 pages! Why did I spend all that time taking the classes when this was around? Of course, if I hadn't taken those courses, I wouldn't know what the author has summarized. I also wouldn't have the slightest idea of how to deal with this information. Nevertheless ...

Actually, I bought this book because there have been times in the last few years when I really needed to calculate one of those mystical figures. Trying to figure out how to construct a "hip roof?" You need to have an equilateral triangle at each short end. And how do you figure out the size of it if you only know the shape it will cover? Do you want to know whether or not your home's electrical system will explode if you plug in that lamp? It helps to know how to convert volts into amps.

Wooden Books just keeps coming up with lovely, amusing titles. They may even be able to keep up with my ever-expanding desire to know everything there is to know about the universe. And the nicest thing about their books is the fact that I can find room for them, even on my overloaded bookcases.… (meer)
