Samuel Weber is Avalon Foundation Professor of the Humanities at Northwestern University and director of its Paris Program in Critical Theory. He is author of twelve books, including, most recently, Benjamin's -abilities and, in French, Inquitantes singularits. It turns out that the putative fame of Weber's book comes from the fact that he was one of the first to articulate Lacan's ideas for a German audience for which, as in English, few translation were available at the time. In this respect, then, Return to Freud can be seen historically as an important book, even though it is now very much out of date. Weber focuses almost exclusively on explaining the various intersections between linguistics and psychoanalysis that Lacan creates in his work. There is also an appendix of passing historical interest on the battle over the ownership of Lacan's unpublished writings, but otherwise readers would be better finding a more expansive introduction to Lacanian thought.… (meer)
