The subtitle of Samuel Weber's Return to Freud is "Jacques Lacan's Dislocation of Psychoanalysis," a curious phrase that seemed to warrant further investigation. Upon closer inspection, it seems that Weber is merely talking about the shift from the psychological to the linguistic that takes place in Lacan's work with his appropriation of Saussure's structuralism - hardly an original insight, given that it is the central argument of Lacan's essay "The Instance of the Letter in the Unconscious, or Reason Since Freud."

It turns out that the putative fame of Weber's book comes from the fact that he was one of the first to articulate Lacan's ideas for a German audience for which, as in English, few translation were available at the time. In this respect, then, Return to Freud can be seen historically as an important book, even though it is now very much out of date. Weber focuses almost exclusively on explaining the various intersections between linguistics and psychoanalysis that Lacan creates in his work. There is also an appendix of passing historical interest on the battle over the ownership of Lacan's unpublished writings, but otherwise readers would be better finding a more expansive introduction to Lacanian thought.
