A good read (or listen) for North Carolinians!! Especially those of the New Bern area

I volunteered to listen-for-review this historical fiction novel of Baron Christoph de Graffenried, founder of New Bern, North Carolina. I am a fan of audio books, not much of a fan of non-fiction, but a fan of historical romance. This book made history interesting and fascinating as it focused on the movement of the Swiss/Germany refugees coming to the new world.

To that end, I eagerly jumped into this four-hour audio book and found myself interested in the story of the founder of and founding of New Bern, North Carolina (a city and area so often the center of Nicholas Spark novels). Though the story is described as a historical fiction with action, adventure and romance, the adventure is present, as is intrigue, rather than "action" and the romance is far from romantic. That the main character loves his new wife does not make the story a romance.

While I enjoyed the story, the history of New Bern and the biography of Christoph de Graffenried, the reader left much to be desired, and much to be appreciated by other readers. The reader's voice was monotone, lacking in emotion/feeling called for in the dialogue consistent with the scenes. The reader read too fast, read through periods, did not pause for commas, had noticeable mispronunciations and sounded more computer-generated than human in his rhythm.

Had I read the book for review, I would rate the book a 4-star. Instead, I am rating the audio book and must take off for the reader's negative impact on my listening experience.

It is somewhat awkward to admit, I do not understand the title of this book. I do not know the meaning of the purple ribbon or it's connection to New Bern. I assume that the "knight" was Baron Christoph, as he did rise above his reputation of irresponsibility and unreliability to being this new community and its citizens through the hardships of colonial life, lying thieves and irate Native Americans.
