As with its predecessor, this second novel about Sarah Gilchrist, aspiring physician, has a fascinating and complex protagonist. Unfortunately the mystery plot this time is even less believable than before, with various loose ends and an obvious villain. The writing about plot points feels sloppy. This book series would be far better if it disposed of the mystery "hook" altogether and focused on the experiences of Gilchrist and other women medical students in 1890s Edinburgh. Their struggles and triumphs are interesting on their own.… (meer)

The mystery and the rushed finale of this novel are its the weakest parts. The protagonist, on the other hand, is strong, complex, and relatable; she makes this book worth reading. Recommended for all libraries.

We were introduced to Sarah Gilchrist in THE WAGES OF SINS and her plight continues in THE UNQUIET HEART. Sarah has always dreamed of becoming a doctor. However, because it's 1893, it is the general opinion that women should not strive to be something other than wives and mothers. And she has paid dearly for her dreams. Now, she may have to marry a man she doesn't love because her family demands it. But, then a housemaid in her fiance's house is murdered and she wants to know if Miles had anything to do with it.

THE WAGES OF SIN is a historical fiction that has just the right ingredients for me. We have a strong heroine with a past that haunts her, a murder mystery and just the right amount of romance, which for me is pretty little. I love it when you can feel the chemistry between two characters and the author doesn't rush away with it instead builds it up slowly. The book also deals with something that is very close to my heart, women's right to study. Actually, it deals with more than that, the book also deals with things like a woman's right to her own body for instance abortions is a grave sin.
