Excerpts from Oral Histories that are part of the Library of Congress's Oral History Project, arranged thematically. Women are included under numerous themes, including Answering the Call, A Day in the Life, They Also Serve and Coming Home. The only chapter in which women are significantly absent is "Under Fire." It needn't have been that way, of course, if the Library's interviewers had looked for women who served under fire. However the probably assumed that women did not serve under fire in World War II.… (meer)

A nice thin volume with excellent clear photos from the Library of Congress. This book documents the actual words of war veterans and their families. Covered are WWI, WWII, Vietnam, and the Persian Gulf War (Iraq I). Korea is absent with no reason given. The book chapters are divided into Answering the Call, Under Fire, The Specialists, WWII Home Front, and Coming Home. This was not a "readers book." The typeface was difficult to read and the paperback binding did not standup well to useage. The stories were well suited to scholarly research on the subject, but were not in the "voice" of the people recounting the events; almost no one talks the way the stories were written. Dispire my love of books, and my patriotic love of country and service members, I fond this to be a very difficult read.

Tom Wiener takes his readers on a journey of discovery that lets you see war as it was seen by those who lived it. He doesn't set out to prove some point of view or perspective, but, rather lets peoples lives tell the story as it was. A very good book.
