A deeply thoughtful personal book about being a black citizen in the world. Afropessimism involves a philosophy the Blacks are useful tools as victims of not just Whites but all other races and ethnicities. In the book he refers to Blacks as Slaves and the others as Humans. Humans are people but slaves are merely implements to be used by Humans. Wilderson mines his personal experiences as evidence for his contentions. You may or may not believe the author's thesis but it is definitely food for thought.… (meer)

It is normal for drivers to judge whether they can through a yellow light before it turns red. It is not normal to be stopped at a red light with a car racing towards you playing chicken with your rear end. For the author life is always a game of chicken where the results are real and life threatening. The descriptive writing takes you along in his journey called living.

A riveting memoir written in part in South Africa during apartheid and also part in the US. Wilderson really details the anti-apartheid movement, and how the radical (as always) ideas were sold out to mainstream economic viewpoints. He also writes about social issues in the US, being with white women and living as a black man in a racial society.
