This book is a collection of poems by Sally Wolf about birds. She has been in love with watching birds since middle school. The poems are about her observations while watching the birds.

Summary: The Robin makes a laughing sound has a look of a journal. Inside this journal are descriptions of different types of birds and poems that go along with that same theme.
Personal reaction: This book was not as interesting as other poem books I have read. It was hard keeping my attention focused because it seems as if you are reading the same thing over and over again. There are a few poems that are sweet. The art in my opinion could have been more exciting to make the poems more interesting.
Classroom Extension Ideas: I would not choose to use this book in any lessons but if I had to I would choose one of the poems as an introduction to a bird lesson, or pass it around for a sampling of journaling.

A semitrailer get stuck under a low overpass. Traffic backs up, horns are blaring, news crews arrive, tow trucks fail, until finally a little girl thinks to let the air out of the tires. The language is sparse. What makes this book are the cute illustrations, including and Elvis impersonator in a pink Cadillac, and the rhymes. Both my 2-yr-old son and 4-yr-old daughter love it.

We almost liked this book. The pictures are large and friendly and attractive, and there are alot of interesting things to point out and talk about. But for some reason my children didn't find this book engrossing at all.

I thought about it for awhile and have concluded that the reason they aren't enthusiastic is because the rhymes just aren't their style. You see, we read ALOT of poetry (son and daughter, 3 and 5 respectively) and I think the not quite free-verse style of this author threws them off.

For example, at one point the rhyming words are ... bank/yank...
sack/back...(so far, okay)... and then truck/money. Hmmm.

I am going to try to overcome this by just leaving off the last two lines of every paragraph (the truck/money part) and see how it goes. Other than that it is a delightful book.
