Korte biografie
Author, Publisher. Born in New York City, New York, he was a member of the "Futurians", a group of science fiction enthusiasts who would go on to be prominent authors and editors in the field. He was one of the leading influences on the development of science fiction in the United States in the 20th century. He founded DAW Books in 1971 (company designed to produce exclusively science fiction publications), and is remembered for works such as "Across Time," "The Martian Missile," "Destination Saturn," "Two Dozen Dragon Eggs" and "The Man From Ariel."

Besprekingen

Waterslag SF verhalen 3 door Donald A. Wollheim
Engelstalige science fiction uit de jaren zeventig vertaald in het Nederlands? Dat boek kan niet anders dan uit de erfenis van mijn vader komen. Ondanks dat hij prima Engels lezen kon, koos hij toch altijd voor de vertaling want dat was makkelijker. En ik denk in die tijd dat het ook meer gebruikelijk was om vertalingen te lezen.

Omdat ik zelf zo gewend ben om science fiction verhalen in het Engels te lezen, knarst het vaak een beetje in mijn hoofd als ik dan een vertaling lees. In het Nederlands klinkt het dan opeens zo kinderachtig of is de magie van de technologische termen verdwenen. Opmerkelijk bij dit boek was dat ik dit knarsen nauwelijks gehad heb. Dit zou heel goed kunnen komen omdat bijna alle verhalen in deze bundel van behoorlijke kwaliteit zijn.

De schrijvers Isaac Asimov, Larry Niven, Robert Silverberg en R.A. Lafferty waren al bij mij bekend. Theodore Sturgeon, Bob Shaw, Gregory Benford, Michael G. Coney en Neal Barrett Jr zijn nieuw voor mij. Veel van deze verhalen uit het begin van de jaren zeventig gaan over evolutie, genetische manipulatie, zoeken naar nieuwe woongebieden (op aarde en daarbuiten) en bedreigingen door buitenaardse wezens.
