Robert Wooster

The American Military Frontiers was a fascinating audiobook. It traces the history of the US Army back to the very beginnings of our nation. It contains a wealth of information. I listened to it in smaller increments than I usually do to help process all the information. I learned quite a bit and am interested in learning more on several sections covered. One example is the Civil War on the frontier. The production values were very good. The volume was steady and there were no extraneous noises. Mr. Chekijian has a pleasant voice. He spoke clearly and I had no difficulty understanding what he was saying. I would recommend The American Military Frontiers for anyone who enjoys American history. Although it may seem more academic, I found it to be very approachable without having an advanced education.

“The Civil War Bookshelf: 50 Must-Read Books about the War Between the States” is a nice reference book for the American Civil War reader.
The author, Robert Wooster, collated a list of 50 (plus a list of nine Honorable Mentions) on the “best, most influential, and most readable” titles on the American Civil War era. For all intents and purposes, Wooster has done a good job with this. Though the limitations he placed on himself for his books I feel limited the ultimate success of the book. Some of the parameters he placed on himself were: the exclusion of multi-volume works; includes only one work by an author, and the avoidance of duplication of subjects and subject matter. Though exceptions are made in a few cases, I feel that these limitations left out some of the best, most influential and must-read titles by some of the more prodigious authors. Also, errors do appear in the text, though if that is Wooster's fault or the editor's, I do not know. The most glaring of these is the repeated misspelling of Mary Chesnut as Mary Chestnut.
“The Civil War Bookshelf” was not meant to be a comprehensive bibliography. That has been done by other authors, such as David J. Eicher's "The Civil War in Books: An Analytical Bibliography". Though not as detailed as the Eicher's tome, Wooster still has does a fine job with the titles he has chosen.
Any way you look at it, this is not a bad title to have on your shelf. It is not essential or a must-have, but should also not be forgotten.… (meer)
