Wiktor Woroszylski (1927–1996)

The life of Russia’s eminent poet Vladimir Mayakovsky (1893-1930) is presented through contemporary records: reports, letters, reminiscences, newspaper articles, … written by his friends and enemies as well as extracts from his poems, letters, statements and speeches. It gives a vivid impression of the person he was and became. It also let us glimpse at the Russian intellectual life through the turbulent times of the Revolution and the first decade of the Soviet Union. It is an invaluable source for anybody interested in Mayakovsky and his times.
It may come as a surprise to learn that in Russia and the USSR during those times audiences crowded to poetry readings. I could compare the translation of a few of his letters and stanzas with the translation into German by Karl Dedecius(https://www.librarything.com/work/27627114/reviews/211444621). Here is an example:

From the ‘Flute of the Spine’ (S.168):

Instead I rampaged till dawn
in horror that you are taken,
in order to love like a wife,
and I polished my scream into stanzas,
a half-mad jeweler.

in wine to find the truth —

From the ‘Last Letter’ (526):

Do not charge anyone with the responsibility for my death and, please, do not gossip. The deceased very much disliked gossip. […]
As they say, a bungled story.
Love’s boat smashed against existence.
And we are quits with life. So why should we
idly approach each other with pains and harms?

Dedecius (104):

Ich sterbe, macht niemand dafür verantwortlich, und bitte kein Gerede. Der Verstorbene haßte das. […]
Wie man so sagt — „der Fall ist jetzt erledigt“,
das Liebesboot am Alltagskram zerschellt.
Ich bin mit dem Leben quitt, es ist nicht nötig,
daß man sich Not und Qual entgegenhält.

Wieviel schöner ist doch die Übersetzung ins Deutsche von Dedecius! Pasternak - er sprach Deutsch - pries sie als wohl unübertreffbar.

The English of addressing Lilja is insipid and beset by the ambiguity of ‘foxy’ and ‘pussy’ in vernacular/slang; some examples:
