Sadly this is a book that could, with a bit more research and running down a few footnotes have been a much better production. Mr. Wragg does point out that the German inter-war economy could not have supported the re-armament of the German Navy out-lined in the Plan Z. But there's not a reference to the economic structure of the Nazi state buttressed by reference to actual, quotable data.
the bibliography hasn't any references to works specifically targeting the French or Italian Navies of the period, though each force has a chapter devoted to it in the text. For the German point of view we find his sources were Admirals Raeder and Doenitz's autobiographies and the translated Fuehrer conference accounts...and only the Janes history of WWII at sea . there are very detailed descriptions of the PQ17 disaster and the sinkng of the Scharnhorst by Duke of York. Perhaps these were included to bulk up the mass of the book?
There is also a spotty chronology of the German Naval side of WWII, and a number of "What if's... either based on the fact that an aircraft carrier would have aided the German side, and the considerable alternate history sections where the Germans manage to pass the Straits of Gibraltar with either the French Navy intact and/or the Italian Navy doing the same. The chapter on Seizing the French Fleet (For the Axis) is riddled with examples of poor research...Not spending a few sentences on the differences between the sizes of Metric as opposed to Imperial gun calibres, assigning the wrong gun calibres to the Washington treaty gun size limitations, and miscounting the numbers of French Cruisers and their weaponry.
All things considered, don't buy this book, it doesn't even have deck plans or drawings of the Z plan ships!… (meer)

Podrobný popis činnosti a složení arktických konvojů a jejich eskort během 2. světové války, kdy v rámci spojenecké pomoci přepravovaly válečný materiál do Sovětského svazu. Uvádějí se statistické údaje o množství a druhu dodávaného materiálu, počty ztracených lodí, některé jejich charakteristiky, zaměření jejich činnosti v konvojích, a popisují se okolnosti střetů s Němci, za kterých ke ztrátám došlo. Kniha věnuje značnou pozornost charakteru a problémům tohoto spojenectví a kriticky je hodnotí.

Operace Barbarossa, přepadení Sovětského svazu nacistickým Německem v roce 1941, vedla k tomu, že SSSR se doslova přes noc stal spojencem Západu, a jak se ukázalo spojencem obtížným, nebezpečným a náročným.
Stalin zoufale potřeboval naftu, výzbroj a moderní technické vybavení, a jediný možný způsob, jak z Británie tyto materiály do SSSR dopravit, byla trasa vedoucí kolem Severního mysu a dál do Archangelska a Murmanska. Obchodním lodím hrozilo nebezpečí ze strany německých leteckých a námořních sil, a nebezpečné bylo i počasí.
Autor nezpochybňuje myšlenku, že SSSR pomoc potřeboval, uvádí však řadu důkazů, že dodávky válečného materiálu, který se za cenu značných obětí materiálních i lidských podařilo do SSSR dopravit navzdory útokům německých letadel, hladinových plavidel a ponorek, často nebyly využity tím nejlepším způsobem. V sovětských materiálech se najde jen málo zmínek o tom, jaký význam měly výzbroj a materiál, dodané Británií a Amerikou, pro boj SSSR s nacistickým Německem. Na jiných bojištích samotná Británie i Amerika musely vystačit se starší a nedostatečnou výzbrojí. Navíc modernější prostředky, dodané do SSSR, přispěly (v podstatě podle očekávání) k tomu, že Sověti během studené války po celé půlstoletí okupovali východní a střední Evropu.

Kniha Obětováno Stalinovi přináší již dlouho potřebné zhodnocení toho, zda spojenecká pomoc byla namístě, nebo zda dokonce nebyla kontraproduktivní. Autor knihy je jedním z předních historiků zabývajících se otázkami bojů na moři během 2. světové války; při shromažďování materiálu čerpal z oficiálních záznamů a z osobních zkušeností zúčastněných.… (meer)
