A beautifully illustrated retelling of the Chinese folktale Mulan, told simply and clearly: when Mulan's father is called to join the army, Mulan goes in his place. She is skillful and brave, but when she appears before the emperor, she turns down his appointment to the high court, saying her dearest wish is to return home to her family. Her army buddies are stunned ("How is it possible we did not know that our respected leader was a girl all along?"), to which Mulan responds, "One should not judge another by their appearance alone.
