Friderike Maria Zweig

2060 Stefan Zweig, by Friderike Zweig translated by Erna McArthur (read 4 Mar 1987) This is 1946 book by Zweig's first wife. I read it because when on Feb 23, 1987, I read his autobiography he said nothing therein about his marriages. This book tells how he and his first wife met (she was at the time married, the mother of two children, and Catholic), their life together, and how he took up with his secretary. (The author first learned of the affair and describes such learning as follows: "Hastening back to the hotel, I entered my husband's study from the bedroom. Unfortunately it was an inopportune moment.") They were divorced. He married Lotte, and they killed themselves together in Brazil. This book is not well-written, and it is full of catty little nuances even though she is very laudatory of her husband's talents. But the time spent reading it was not very profitably spent, since I had been over a lot of the same territory just days ago when I read Zweig's The World of Yesterday.… (meer)
