Over mijn bibliotheek
Nothing is cataloged per se--rather lumped together. The secretary holds my favorite authors: Loren Eiseley, May Sarton, Eudora Welty, Edgar Allan Poe, Jan Morris, Dylan Thomas. In the same room, another bookcase holds books on old houses, gardening, Butler and Pittsburgh history and catalogs from art exhibits. Upstairs, a small leaded glass bookcase is filled with Feng Shui books. In my "study", a four foot shelf boasts about 40 books on China--language, literature, calligraphy and commentary. An oak barrister's bookshelf is crammed with origami, genealogy and dream books. I am an avid mystery reader, but don't usually keep those in "my library." At present I'm engrossed with Jane Haddam mysteries.
Over mij
I'm a compulsive accumulator of books. As I'm taking down two crumbling ceilings in my 105-year-old home, I've had to empty several bookcases. There are books everywhere. I tell myself, "At least it shows I was interested in a diversity of subjects." However, when I go to sell my books, few people are interested in the same as I was. Who is off? I prefer to think it is they. I give my grandchildren books for Christmas, and I suspect they are never even cracked. I'm glad I developed a love of reading--it has enriched my life. I can't imagine a home without books. I can't imagine life without books.
