Latest News: The downsizing continues for the book and map collection with lots of books and rare publications being donated to several university libraries that want to add these titles to their collections.

The library book collection reflects the various and diverse interests I have. The "collecting" has been mainly through chance encounters in used book stores. The specific regions where I have lived have an interest reflected in the various titles. thus Midwest, New England with Maine of particular interest, California and the West, and Virginia area. Plus the various overseas travels over the years.

Also, I collect maps of various types and places and just starting on the entry of those several map collections I have inherited or rescued from the trash.

The latest phase for the book "de-collection" starting in 2016 is that many of the architectural and historic preservation books of often a technical nature are being donated to benefit the architecture program at the University of Maine, Augusta. In checking the WorldCat, the nearest libraries that have any of these books are typically in Boston, Cambridge, and for a few on the West Coast. Lots more books will be donated on an ongoing basis as the different book themes are reviewed. Also, over many years I have been making donations of various historic preservation publications to the Special Collections at the Hornbake Library, University of Maryland, College Park, and art history reference books to Sweet Briar College. And one of the rare maps was recently donated to the Peabody Essex Museum for their astounding archive/library collection.

American Midwest farmboy - 4H Baby Beef Club, freshman and junior class president, Buckeye Boys' State (after my defeat in the legislative election, I was lucky through "patronage" in knowing a fellow dorm-mate who was in the newly elected governor's inner circle and I ended up being appointed State Director of Public Works (which in a way reflected in my career path: luck, networking, being in the right place at the right time, and ready to jump), public schools in Ohio and home-schooled for the winter in Palm Beach for second grade (my father was between selling the milk herd and before he bought the black Angus herd) and after that my parents went south every winter with our young sister, and my brother and I took care of the beef herd, pigs, geese, barn cats, the German Shepherd guard dog, and the "imperial" Siamese house cats with our grandmother cooking the meals and tending the house - it was all just fine as I loved my grandmother. Then I went on to college, graduate school & post-grad training - Cleveland, Boston, Columbus, Berkeley, Washington, Cambridge, and a summer internship in Dublin followed by hitchhiking around Europe as far as Rome; A.B. cum laude in urban & environmental studies; M. Arch. in architecture with interests in historic preservation, urban & regional planning, and land conservation; a work career in all sectors of the economy - private, non-profit & publics entities: an underage child farm laborer, fast food griller, carpet layer, hardware store assistant, aluminum casting mill laborer, steel mill laborer, computer room assistant for the basic oxygen furnace in the steel mill, FAA intern, researcher for a proposed new town in town project, architectural office boy, assistant to an architect designing custom luxury single family houses, architectural school studio critic, an independent consultant doing historic inventory work; regional preservation officer, Park Service architect, the lead preservation designer on a major monumental building project rehabilitation/restoration and seismic retro-fit in a large multi-national architectural firm; project manager of various restoration/rehabilitation projects for a national historic preservation non-profit; plus other positions along the way. Now volunteer work is of interest in historic preservation, land conservation, and libraries; and as most everyone in Washington, DC eventually refers to themselves as a "consultant" of some sort or another.
