Over the years I have collected the works of 20th century poet and novelist (and all-around man of letters) Christopher Darlington Morley. I try to collect first editions, preferably autographed. I also have a satelite collection of Morley's "Golden Florins". Beyond his primary works, Christopher Morley was a prolific preface writer and I have many of the books in which his prefaces appear. Morley had an intriguing career during which he wrote novels, poetry, essays and magazine articles. He served as editor for Bartlett's Familiar Quotations (was it the 13th edition?). Known to his friends as "Kit", he was given to forming clubs, including most famously, The Baker Street Irregulars, and the Three Hours for Lunch Club. This latter became the title of his biography, written by Helen Oakes. Christopher Morley was a student at Haverford College and was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford, where he published his first collection of poems, The Eighth Sin. Interest in Morley led me concurrently to books about books. I'd go into the A. Edward Newton connection, but others have done the biographical details very well. There are several published bibliographies of Morley's books, and Morleyana, including monographs by Alfred Lee and Guy Lyle. Collecting Morleyana is easy on the purse, which made him an ideal place to begin for a young bibliophile. He had a ready pen for autographing his books, making them reasonably common.
