As a 3D Artist I run and maintain a network of hardware that is expanding and always threats my creative responsiveness -but it's the only tool of my trade. Specifications for those interested: 2×8-core main PC stations (16 GB RAM, twin NVidia Quadro FX5600 cards), a small renderfarm of 5×4-core PCs, 4×QNAP servers of 4 TB each for dedicated backup and storage purposes, 3×photographic cameras, 2×flatbed scanners (A3 and A4 size), all the necessary paraphernalia (screens, UPSs, WACOM™ tablets, good music, 2×mountain bikes, good running shoes, etc). Software used: Rhino3D™, Orca™, Brazil™, Maxsurf™, Delftship™, Terragen™, Blender™, Maya™, MentalRay™, VRay™, Maxwell™, Octane™, Mari™, Nuke™, Fusion™, Photoshop™, Wordpress™, Zotero™, Mendeley™, WhereIsIt™. Also various editions for OCR, index and electronic production of documents.
As a researcher I founded a relevant Zotero group (check https://www.zotero.org/nafentakis) which is about studying almost every aspect of the great -or not so great- ships of the first World War era (in broader terms from 1850 to 1930). This research is concerned about all the technological implementations and advancements, about people, weapons, naval battles, wrecks, etc. Submarines, airships and lighthouses are of great interest too. My library consists of as much printed material as I can buy, borrow and study. All material is converted to electronic form (PDFs), then OCR-processed and indexed (to facilitate search instantly, effortlessly and accurately). Needless to emphasize the fact of my respect for legal rights: In order to maintain a big library, I buy books, plans, etc, I produce and keep a digital copy for my personal use and finally resell the hard copy so to refund more purchases.
This method is one that shines under current technology implementations. I use Zotero to handle all of my library, mainly because I need a citation manager (LT is not that -maybe will involve in the future) and it's open source software far more able than counterparts as Endnote, Mendeley, etc. That's my humble opinion by the way -or to be more precise, the solution best suited to my needs. In my ambition to become a genuine scholar of the ship illustration and history, I realize that this effort now-days starts by sustaining an ever-growing electronic library.
My country is successfully involved in naval affairs and traditions for so much time that I feel my interests are deeply connected with my origins and my own history. I sincerely hope to connect with more people of similar interests worldwide - the prospect of a thriving community excites me. Please feel free to express any interest toward the cause. I am a naval illustrator and researcher involved in 3D reconstructions of ships (mainly) and heavily interested in all maritime history from the World War I Dreadnought era. Submarines, airships, airplanes and lighthouses are not excluded.
