I am ten years behind in my reading. I tend to buy hardcover first editions of books that I like for any number of reasons - the cover (all durafold wrapped), the subject, the author, or because I'm compulsive about sets (Evans on the Reich, Hollander and Durling on the Divine Comedy).

I'll never read them all, but often I'll take one off the shelf, leaf through it, smell it, touch it, wonder at it, then put it back. That's not enough, but it keeps me sane.

Over mij

I'm a sometimes grumpy, writerly, licensed old curmudgeon with profoundly iconoclastic tendencies. I survived Brown University and a stint as a reporter for a daily newspaper. I'm a thoroughly well-rounded codger-in-waiting, smattered (barely) with Latin and Greek, utterly surrounded by books, and possessed by one cat (used to have thirteen). A good fellow to read, but not one to bring home to meet mother.

I play backgammon, collect books, write sometimes amusing things, and occasionally demonstrate some smarts, but not about anything practical. I did write and publish Harbor City Kill, about a detective and his redheaded reporter girlfriend/murder victim in a corrupt city somewhere in New England. I still like to read it. Working on a sequel.
