Anyone planning to go? I'm going to take a few days vacation and attend this conference for GLBT Libraries. I love LA and May is a great time to be there.

I know its a long way for many of us but this could be a great opportunity to meet face to face and expand our networking beyond LT.

Check out the link below and let me know what you think.

Hoping I will be there to represent Quatrefoil Library from St. Paul, MN!

The Phil Johnson Library, Resource Center Dallas is planning on attending the ALMS conference. Looking forward to returning to LA and meeting everyone.

I'm hoping to attend finally this year! I'm the librarian for Q Center in Portland, Oregon. We are all volunteer run, and host meetings, parties, and community groups. Our collection is nearing complete processing, and will circulate in the new year. Thanks!

It's been about 4 months since I posted about the upcoming conference in May. I'm hoping that those of us who manage volunteer run community libraries can get together for a round table discussion, lunch, drinks or something. Karen from Quatrefoil in St. Paul has sent or will be sending us about 200 boxes of books. I'll be buying all of her drinks. Hope the rest of you can join us. I'll be looking for other libraries that want our duplicates. Then you can buy my drinks at the next conference.

I was thinking of asking the conference organizers for a time slot for us to meet. Is everyone interested? Let's talk about exchanges, rare and unique stuff, using LT, needed LT improvements (non-print, serials, TOC, sharing manual input copy, other), managing porn collections, adding stuff to Google Books, managing volunteers, space issues, fund raising, fund raising for travel and whatever.

If I've still got your attention: is anyone going to BookExpo and the Lambda Literary Awards Ceremony and Party in NYC at the end of May? This will be the first time in 5 or 6 years that I haven't been.

Anyway, if you like the idea of going to BookExpo and the Lambda Literary Awards Ceremony and Party but you have never been let me know. I'll be happy to what I know and tell you what to look for.

Would love to get together with other community based libraries at the ALMS conference. It would be great if the ALMS conference organizers would make an official time slot.

Short of getting a specific time slot let's at least plan to get together for lunch, drinks and or dinner on Friday. If there's a message board I'll post something on Friday morning. Dan / GLCC

Darn...I would LOVE to go, but I've just started looking into conferences and activities for LGBT libraries and librarians, and only just found out about this! Maybe next year's will be closer to the Midwest? For those of you going, please keep the rest of us posted on what's new and awesome...

The conference in LA was great. Fortunately or unfortunately, next year's conference is in Amsterdam. I'm hoping to go but not committing yet.

Would anyone be interested in coming to Pittsburgh if we had a small conference focusing on GLBT community (volunteer) run libraries?

As good as the LA meeting was the focus was on archives. I learned a lot and it made me think more about what we need to do to preserve GLBT history in Pittsburgh.

I had hoped there would be more opportunities for those of us who run volunteer based, community libraries to share our successes and problems.

If you've never been to Pittsburgh I can guarantee you'll have a good time. My only complaint about living here is that there is too much to do. Advocate magazine rated Pittsburgh as one of the "gayest cities" in America. http://www.advocate.com/Print_Issue/Travel/Gayest_Cities_in_America_February_201...

Not trying to compete with ALMS but a more focused meeting could be valuable to us.

Would love to see a gathering of community based GLBT Libraries and/or ways to have community based libraries be more in touch with each other. Maybe we need a FB group and/or email list/group?

Went to ALMS in NY but was not able to go to LA. My sense of the NY meeting was that it was mainly aimed at the academically based libraries. You can email me directly at: library@rcdallas.org

Glad you like this idea. You are definitely right about ALMS being academiclly focused. Those folks have got to earn tenure somehow. I used to be in academia so I know.

A more community based library conference would be fun and useful I think. If you want to start a facebook page I'll help you promote it. It would make our libraries more visible to the public. I have a facebook page for my library and it get a fair amount of traffic.

We too have a Facebook page - and yes I could start a FB page for group but I'm not really good with coming up with names -

Lambda Libraries - that may be too close to Lambda Literary and Lambda Legal. Sacramento uses the name Lavender Library so I think using the plural would be too close. CLAGS is already also used. Oklahoma Equality Center uses Rainbow Library. University of Western Ontario uses Pride Library for their LGBT collection.

any name ideas?

This sounds like a great idea - could we start a new thread so this isn't hiding in the LA conference thread? I'm curious, though. As a somewhat intermittent Facebook user personally, what are the advantages to setting up a Facebook page vs. having a LibraryThing thread?

I'm not saying it's not a good idea, it's just that I tend to avoid Facebook because it's too tempting and has been a big time sink for me in the past.

"I had hoped there would be more opportunities for those of us who run volunteer based, community libraries to share our successes and problems."

I don't know if you'll see this thread since it's so old. I hope you do. I attended the ALMS Conference in West Hollywood and I loved it! I hope it returns to L.A. since it was in Europe last year.

I'm one of those volunteers you describe and I think it would be a terrific topic as I know there are so many of us out there. I'm a library volunteer at the Tom of Finland Foundation in Los Angeles and we definitely have our successes and problems (-;

I hope you were able to get something going.

Warmest regards,
Toni Rodriguez, MLIS
