Hello everybody,

so here it is, my first challenge thread! I've been reading around some and am already way too inspired for my own good, seeing as my own tbr pile can compete with the world's tallest building ... I won't repeat my introduction here (this post would become too long), but if you're interested, it's in the introduction thread!

Even though I had planned on starting with a "1001 books" novel, I switched my first book of the year to be Abschied von Sidonie (Farewell Sidonia) by Erich Hackl (now why is that touchstone not working?). Anyways, I remember watching part of the movie a few years back, and since then, it's been going through my mind. It's going to be a very moving book, not the best one if you want to start out with an upbeat story, but I'm looking forward to it!

Sandra

Thank you, wookiebender!

I finished Hackl Abschied von Sidonie - what a heartbreaking book! What I didn't know when I started reading was that it's a true story! It takes place in Austria in the 1930s and chronicles the life of a Roma girl who grows up with Austrian foster parents and is taken from them in 1943 and killed in Auschwitz. A quiet, well-written little book that should be read by everyone! Additionally, I read a book with interviews, photos and other materials revolving around the story - Abschied von Sidonie. Materialien zu einem Buch und seiner Geschichte.

Now starting All the Pretty Horses by Cormac McCarthy.
