I've been reading Holmes lately and I kept casually thinking about the similarites between Dr. Gregory House on FOX and Sherlock Holmes. One day I was struck by the fact that House has only one friend, Dr. Wilson, and Holmes has Dr. Watson.

The connection between the names alone, House and Holmes, should have been obvious. And additionally House is a specialist in diagnostic medicine, hunting up mystery illnesses.

I'll add one final point, though the connections are myraid and seem more and more obvious when I think about them:

Holmes had cocaine and the violin, House has Vicodin and the piano.

Strange indeed....just yesterday I was thinking that Hugh Laurie would make a superb Sherlock Holmes!

I'm afraid I don't have a quote, but I know for sure that the character of House is loosely based on Holmes. House even lives at 221b, though I don't know if it's Baker Street or not.

And it's generally understood that Doyle's inspiration for the character and methods of Holmes was his professor at medical school, Dr. Joseph Bell.

Yes, there is a pretty good tv series about that.

The BBC series on Joseph Bell and young Doyle is very good. I think Dick Wolf borrowed quite a bit of Holmes when he created Detective Goran (sp?) on Law and Order: Criminal Intent. And Detective Eames is his Watson.

Yes, he does live at number 221b, - I remember catching that during one episode of House and cracking up.
