Does anyone in this group have a blog? I love to read blogs, and I'd love to see what the folks here have to talk about. Kind of to see if we have more in common than just books! LOL!

I haven't put any real writing up, either. Most of what I've done is short stories and character sketch work, which is easy to filch. If I posted a couple pages here and there out of a longer piece I don't think I'd be as concerned.

I haven't, not really. The closest I've come to posting "real" writing is a few excerpts from my NaNoWriMo story. It was closer to performance art than any real writing I may have done.

I post about just about all "real" writing I do, so I'd love to answer any questions you guys have on that topic. Basically, publishing your writing to the web is just as binding as publishing it in a book. Be sure to keep your copyright notice on the website and because the writing is yours (you own the copyright to it) you are free to republish it should a nice book offer come along. It's your right.

Another thing to consider is that Copyright (All Rights Reserved) is very restrictive and if you trust your blog users or just want to make sure that in this digital era the cool stuff you write is useful for other people, I would suggest looking into a Creative Commons License (Some Rights Reserved). For instance, I mostly use a license that requires people to acknowledge the work is from me if they republish it somewhere else, to only republish if its for non-commercial use, and allow them to make derivatives (remix, rewrite, edit) my stuff as long as they release it under the same license.

yep, all the time, that's why I never post any of my works in progress online anywhere, blog or otherwise

you are a published writer, even if you only publish on your blog. (an added bonus is that you can tell people you are a published writer; sad part of it is you don't get to hold book signings and autograph a print copy for your fans)

stealing your work... yep, I've had that problem; only just last month, I found that a post I had written on my blog (including copyrighted photographs taken by me, for the cover of one of my books!) has been copied and posted on about a dozen or so other blogs, without my permission, and without any back links to my blog, and without any acknowledgement that I was the author of the post or the copyright holder of the photo! (a personal family photo, I might add!)... it seems to be just one person doing this, but as yet, I have been unsuccessful in my attempt at contacting them

I've also added this tag to all my blog posts. Well, most of them, I only started adding it this week, so my old posts don't have it.

I don't have a blog, but I do have a web site with (currently) six writers and two in the making. It's called BiblioBuffet, and its motto is "Writing Worth Reading, Reading Worth Writing About." We focus on book reviews, commentary, essays, humor, profiles, interviews, and will even use short stories (though none have been submitted to date) and poetry. As long as it has to do with books, reading or related subjects we love to write about it.

Yep. Actually, I learned that doing NaNoWriMo last year. A number of people were posting their novel's progress on their blogs.

I haven't had any writing stolen (I don't think), but I have had pictures taken without my permission. (Chagrined -I'll have to accept that I'm more in demand as a photog than a writer, I guess.) I have a Creative Commons license on my work.

I'm new to LibraryThing and I am an author who has an Amazon Connect blog for my Ratha series (Ratha's Creature, Clan Ground and sequels.) Since the characters are big prehistoric cats, and the series is set 20 million years ago in the Miocene period, I blog about the research I did for the series, including all the prehistoric creatures that are in the book.

What can I say? They appeal to me on a very sick level. He does have a Cafe Press store, but there's not much there. I'd love to have the ability to buy all the demotivators as coffee mugs--I'd buy a variety of sets for various people I know.

If you don't know where they come from, he makes them using a "demotivator maker" from http://www.despair.com, originators of the demotivators. They've been around for years, and if you've ever worked in an office environment where you had to put up with "motivational literature," they'll make you weep with laughter. On this new website, www.redroom.com, I am surprised to find that every other new entry is a statement by an author about the strangeness of being a first time blogger. Some people blog with the question, "Why should I blog?" I've found that blogging gives me room to be silly with doodles and stray thoughts, all unlinked and unrelated. It's a great way place to put the trinkets and geegaws that book writing may not allow. I get to post my doodles and cartoons.

Cliff, your blog pictures of your studio is really interesting. It is indeed a sanctuary.

I've been very happy with the WordPress people, who host my site. Always helpful and quick to respond to questions and problems. Plus they've just upped their limit to 3GB of memory so there's lot of room to grow my blog. Fortunate, because "Beautiful Desolation" will hit 20,000 visits in a very short while (and that's in less than a year). The end of March I'll be posting a full-length novel on my site and I'm very much looking forward to that (though the intensive edits are killing me)...

Oh gods! With so many interesting blogs to catch up on, how will I ever get back to writing? Oh well, my boss used to tell me, “Sleep is highly overrated.” I guess that validtates Truman Capote’s definition of boss.

Let me add to the distraction: The Hermitage. I treat it mostly as an online diary that includes bits of family life. I recently started including book and album reviews. Not much about writing. I started another blog for writing but abandoned it after only a few entries.

The comment about putting writing on a blog being an act of publication caught my attention. I used a blog format to get my first novel to test readers. It was an invitation-only blog, theoretically inaccessible to anyone not specifically invited to read it. I’m wondering now if that was a mistake.

I just finally broke down and started blogging my reading. I found the set up here on LT to be too constricting to give the reviews I really wanted because I felt people click to the book's page to find out quickly if they'll like it. The Blog of the Realm

Definitely! In fact, I've introduced a series of monthly installments that present the rationale behind my second novel, THINKING STRAIGHT. The book is about a gay teen whose parents send him to a summer camp designed to straighten him out. You can read more about the book, including an excerpt from Chapter One, on my Web site (www.robinreardon.com). The story is positive and inclusive. Not only does it respect religious belief, but also it takes a step toward creating a safe place for people of all sexual orientations within the religion called Christianity.

The series is written from the point of view of a gay man—which I am not—so I'm labeling it as a fictional open letter to humanity, addressed to anyone who will read it and consider its points. My hope is that it will further understanding and acceptance. The objective is to demonstrate that the only thing wrong with being gay is how some people treat you when they find out. I invite comment.

I guess I am part of the trend of "blogging at a snail's pace," reported in http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/23/fashion/23slowblog.html, though when I started, I didn't even know this category existed. Thus, I post as something moves me, and not as the calendar moves.

I write about philosophical novels that move me, as described by Camus: "A novel is never anything but a philosophy expressed in images. And in a good novel the philosophy has disappeared into the images. I'm a newbie on LibraryThing, but have been blogging about books for The Baltimore Sun since May 2008. I started the blog -- www.baltimoresun.com/readstreet -- because the Sun was reducing its print coverage of books, and I wanted to create an online alternative. Every day we post general news and opinion about books, with a special focus on Baltimore's literary scene. If you're in the area, there's a monthly calendar of readings and other events.

A lot of the recent posts are about the upcoming tour for my literary performance piece, Portraiture. Just in case you ever wanted to read about the woes of booking performance space, now you can.

I've just begun a blog in which I'm hoping to record my progress as I make a big push at getting my novel finished. (Target is the end of 2009.) The idea is that it will work as a written record of any targets I set for myself, thoughts that occur to me, problems I encounter and how I deal with them. When things are tough, maybe going back and reading what I wrote when I was in the groove will help. I chose to put it online rather than keep it in a private file on my laptop partly because the software is designed for journalling, and partly because in the unlikely event of anyone turning up and reading it, their knowing about my goals may encourage me to stick to them! I felt confined with only one blog because I like to write on lots of different topics. But not everyone that follows my posts on writing cares about the holiday photos of my kids. So I've created seven blogs in one that can be subscribed to individually or collectively (SuperFeed).

Behind the scenes, these are seven separate blogs but in combination they appear as one website with six sections:

Someone has just maliciously deleted my blog! I've been locked out of my Googlemail account and my blog now reads "the author's have deleted this blog"! From what I read, I can't get any of the content back. It has become my only means of expressing myself. I write, and I'm making slow progress. I felt that my blog could become a way of communicating with people, since I don't do a good job of that in the real world. I was feeling that everybody I know is against me somehow. And now this. Both accounts shared the same password. I once wrote it out for someone I was close to. The only person I was close to who I had left. She left me. And now this!

244: *hugs!* That's horrible!! Before thinking the worst, though, do you have any children around/visiting/etc that may have gotten on the computer and accidentally deleted it? (happens all too often on another forum I'm on)

I tend to blog to think out loud - well, in a public forum, and it appears it's easier for me to get back to and reread a blog than it is for me to read a word file or notebook.

I write longhand to begin with and then edit and enter into word.

Ideas I thought were fabulous come back ignored by readers and those I believed mediocre receive accolades.

Just goes to show I don't have a clue what others want to read and as long as I write for me, I may never get to where the story wants me to be!

I think they have an aversion to those two choices, and email just seems to work better for them. Perhaps it is having their words shared for all eternity, for others to see?

Someone once told me the average blog takes 2 years to get any serious traffic. It grows exponentially, so though you may only have one follower for a year and a half, when they link it to a friend, and that friend links it, and their friends link it... You can go from 1 to 100 in a single post.

Other blog tips I've picked up:

You've got to post regularly to stay on the top of the Google searches, and it's got to be novel and unusual to attract attention and to rank anywhere high enough to see! Comment on other people's blog, leaving links to your own where relevant. Guest post (not work safe! Unless you're a very specific kind of Roman Archeaologist...). Link back to other blogs regularly (especially good if they have pingback set up). Ask questions to get people to comment on your posts. Answer questions people ask on theirs.

(and pimp it like mad. Like, say, http://significantkinks.solelyfictional.org. Recent posts include a review of the Bram Stoker Film Festival, seasonal jams, and the latest anthology I have work in.)

Honestly, the most use my blog has ever been is when I've submitted something and then gone on holiday. When the editor couldn't get hold of me they googled my name, found my blog, and realised I wasn't just ignoring or spam filtering them!

Ah, but according to top blogs on how to blog in order to drive traffic to your blog, you need to comment on other people's, and to know what to talk about, you need to link other people's. Therefore, most of the people writing blogs are desperately reading them too, in order to have something to blog about!

More seriously, blogging is a form of social networking like facebook or twitter, so you often find most stand-alone bloggers (as opposed to those linked to newspapers or larger websites) read a lot of other blogs, and form little networks and communities as a result.

I've pimped mine here before, but a little update to it now: having spent a year find and compiling historical recipes, I have officially gone nuts (try drizzling with a little honey and serving with homemade ice-cream, made the Victorian way!) and decided to preserve (most fruits glut in autumn; try using apple peel or similar for pectin to help berry-based jams and preserves to set) my sanity and I've shifted to links instead. I may still post recipes occasionally, but I've posted well over a hundred and I wasn't sure I could think of about twelve themes I actually know enough about to make it worth doing.

This year, I'm posting a selection of links that fall into four categories - Publishing, Interet-Piquing, InsPiring and Procrastion - for Monday Motivation.

Honestly, even if someone did take your work, unless you're posting high-quality, timely work on your blog (which is rare) that odds that anyone is making anything off your work is infinitesimally small. I've had www.piracyhappens.net and www.theautomaton.com for some time, and it's made a whopping $6 in pay-per-click adverts, so I figure that's about how much someone else could make off it as well. Just a thought.

@305 It depends on how stuck in you want to get. I've tried various platforms, and I've settled on WordPress (though I also have a livejournal that I use mainly to stay in touch with friends and for personal posts)

Livejournal (and the other journal sites such as Dreamwidth, Insanejournal and Journalfen) offer a kind of blog/social networking tool, with a high level of interaction between blogs and communities and the ability to follow many other journals on a single friends page. It also has filtering, so you can make semi-private posts as well as public ones.

Blogspot offers a good starter blog, for people who just want to shout into the void until they get commenters. I used it for a while, but I found I wanted something more flexible and intergrated with my own site. It has an option for integration, but after a few months it stopped working and going through the help forums showed I wasn't the only one with this problem.

Wordpress do a good starter package as well, though they also offer a much more hands-on option where you can upload a blog to your own webspace and basically build a website around it. I've been experimenting with it for a while, and I still haven't got quite what I want, but I love the flexibility of it. If you'd already paid for webspace, and it has a SQL server option, it's a great way to make a very intergrated blog without too much effort (since you can base it on the style sheets you already have).

I've also seen people using tumblr for blogging, though I haven't really got my head around that yet.

I'm 60 and I found blogspot pretty easy. It would also help if a family member or friend helped you the first time or two.

On the other hand, don't feel you have to blog if you don't want to.

Wordpress is better than blogspot. I used to be on blogspot, but they kept on randomly locking my blog because their bot mistakenly identified it as a spam blog. Then you have to pretty much beg them to unlock it. They treat you as if it's your fault the bot locked your blog. Use Wordpress.

Blogspot is easier with lots of free functions like uploading images and access to widgets.

But you can use Wordpress.org, the hosted blog if you're more serious with your blogging.

Really, just asking. If I'm going to be a law-abiding citizen here, I need a little help understanding the 'law'.

Posts identical to >324 MarysGirl:, (just to pick out one recent example on this thread - there are many more) just got flagged into oblivion on the "Are you a published author?" thread. Within the last 36 hours that thread went from a quiet backwater with no flags to a blood-red battlefield. Is this thread next? Was that hoard of abuse-flaggers a group of vigilantes or an honorable group of respected citizens?

328: As others have already explained to you, authors promoting their books *will* be flagged outside of the groups specifically for that purpose. I looked through the thread you cited; It's a discussion group, not an invitation to promote books. Also, most of the ones that had been flagged were authors that had catalogued no books and had very obviously joined just to promote their book... Well-established members who happen to be authors will not be met with such wariness.

I recently found that some group from my old college had copied and pasted a large portion of one of my blog posts. I use a pseudonym on my blog so I can't be identified, but I mentioned the name of my college in a blog and they put my stuff on their website to see if anyone could identify me so they could get in touch with me. They did this quite nicely...edited it a bit...but it still disturbs me. I assume they hope to do some fundraising, in which I don't wish to oblige them.

I started a blog on my own, separate from my website, because I wanted to be able to manage it myself. It's not all that easy to find on the amazon website -- best to go to Google and search Kindle Publishing for Blogs.

Then it is very easy -- I'm not quite sure how to promote sales though. Readers subscribe at 99 cents a month and the author gets 30%.

It's interesting. That post http://randyattwood.blogspot.com/2011/09/note-from-walker-percy-about-41st.html is my most read post, but it has resulted in zero sales of the novel. I thought Percy fans would be interested, but I also think I'm dealing with people who haven't accepted the reality of self-publishing through ebooks and probably still look down their noses at it.

Self-publishing has had a bad name for a long time. It used to be called "vanity press." It will take time for that to change.

I got a self-published book (not an e-book) free through member give away and it was pretty bad. I suspect most are, certainly more self-published books are likely to be awful than books that go the traditional route, i.e. having a publishing company buy the rights to one's book.

That's not to say your book is bad, the note from Percy would seem to indicate it is not.

Anyway, good luck with the novel and your writing.

I agree that some self-pubs are awful, I suspect because many who are new to publishing don't understand the importance of revision and outside input from a good editor or writing group.

However, many are great, especially those from writers who have been traditionally published in the past and are tired of jumping through hoops and earning 6% or less from mainstream print publishers and their marketing departments.

The book world is changing quickly, that's for sure.

I began my blog just over a year ago, and see it evolving in ways I never expected. I always tell my students that writing is a "process of discovery" Donald M. Murray, but I've never seen it in my own writing as markedly as in my blog. Granted, in my fiction, characters take over when I don't expect it and endings sort themselves out differently than anticipated, but my blog never fails to surprise me.

What about the rest of you? Do you find yourself discovering thoughts you didn't know you had?
