Any plans to reprint Cortazar's The Winners?

I didn't realize it was out of print. I have a copy that is so old it doesn't have the now-standard NYRB cover format.

I also have a copy in the old format.

I enquired with NYRB some time ago - unfortunately they have lost the rights ot this book, as well as to the Joyce Cary trilogy.

Darn. I hope whoever has the rights publishes a new edition!

I read on NYRBs facebook feed that L.P.Hartley's The Go-Between is also out of print now. The NYRB version has a good introduction by Colm Toibin. Best grab a copy while you can!

Glad I have that one. Do they explain why they le some titles go out of print? Is it all about rights?

Thanks for the heads-up. I have just purchased a copy.

I'd love to see The Story of Harold by Terry Andrews reprinted by NYRB. Edmund White wrote a wonderful essay about it for a collection about writers' favorite OOP books, and I got hold of a copy and was engrossed. It's a weird and wonderful period piece.

Just to let people know The Go-Between is not out of print, nor will it go out of print any time soon. I think that was a misunderstanding having to do with the way posts appear on Facebook.

But this gives me a brilliant marketing idea—say a book is going out of print & watch it fly out the door!

We try our best to keep all the books in the series in print. However, as most of our books are licensed from estates, other publishers, and agencies for a limited period of time, it's not always possible to renew those licenses.

On a related topic, I often see NYRB books remaindered at a bookstore I go to frequently, Book Culture near Columbia in Manhattan. (In fact, I was happy that I bought one of the infinitesimal number of NYRBs I didn't like at a remaindered price.) They do not appear to be titles that are going out of print, but I'm always concerned that there are. Is it just the store trying to reduce its stock?

Hmmm, I should jump on the train and go check that out. I'm always happy to snag NYRBs for less than the sticker price, esp the titles I know in my heart of hearts I won't read any time soon or ever -- but I want to have them to add to my shelves. God I am such a sucker for good-looking, uniformly-designed imprints ....

I would call the books that show up at Book Culture, Symposium, and places like that "overstock" rather than remaindered titles. Their showing up discounted does not mean that they're going out of print.

Do you know that bookstores can return all the books they've ordered for a full refund? It's a not particularly healthy system that can encourage over-ordering. So we have to deal with all the books that get returned—and they end up discounted.

Thanks for that info. I did know bookstores could return everything; it's kind of crazy.

Here is a blog that discusses the return policy a bit more—and gives some figures. I'm sure a bookseller could defend the policy, and I don't want to start any fights—but it can make things hard (and wasteful) for publishers:

The book industry is a billion dollar industry run on the consignment system. It's crazy.

Wow that is fascinating insight to the industry nyrb. I am glad to know about it.

The Strand in NYC must have done quite a bit of over-ordering. They have a small table of recent NYRB books for $7-9
