The American Film Institute's Greatest Movie Musicals

In my introduction to the group I wrote that The Bandwagon (#17)was my favorite movie musical. Do you have one? Is it listed here? I've seen all of these, most of them more than once and I'll bet I'm not alone.

From Wikipedia: Part of the AFI 100 Years… series, AFI's Greatest Movie Musicals is a list of the top musicals in American cinema. The list was unveiled by the American Film Institute at the Hollywood Bowl on September 3, 2006. Unlike most of the previous lists, it only includes 25 winners and was not presented in a televised program.

I've seen 15 of these, mostly the ones from the 40s, 50s, and 60s. West Side Story is my favorite movie musical and it's nice (although totally expected) to see it here. I do wish The Music Man, Oliver!, and Fiddler on the Roof had made it, but I know it's hard to fit everything in when there are only 25 slots.

I love The Bandwagon, too, Teresa, especially the two big Astaire-Charisse dance numbers.

I have seen only part of Cabaret and Chicago. I'm pretty sure I haven't seen Moulin Rouge.
That leaves Top Hat, 42nd Street, All that Jazz, and A Star is Born that I'm not sure if I've seen or not.

I've always been bad with names. If ncgraham hadn't mentioned Astaire-Charisse dance numbers, I wouldn't know if I'd seen Bandwagon, either. ::rueful::

I have just joined the group. and noticed this topic - I have seen all of the movies on the list except, believe it or not. Beauty and the beast. I have to agree with theaelizabet that the Band Wagon is one of the best of all movie musicals. . . but then Singin' in the Rain is pretty fantastic. . .and then there is Seven Brides. . . These were all original movie musicals, whreas more than half of the list were adapted from stage hits, so perhaps there should be two lists, whcih would enable ncgraham to include some of her favorites. . .:)
