What do you think about using "Ordnance Survey" in the author field for British OS Maps? Since there is no real person called Mr or Mrs O. Survey, I'm inclined to leave the author field blank for all my OS maps and just have Ordnance Survey as the publisher? Any views or suggestions about usage for other fields? Thanks Toby

LibraryThing has a category for "corporate authors" - i.e., authors who aren't actual people. There are lots of them around. (You don't have to do anything special to do that; it's part of Common Knowledge, so all users can go through and help categorize authors.)

I definitely recommend putting something in the author field; 'author' is used in a lot of places to help tell different entries apart (and group things together), and a blank author can make that a lot harder. I have all my U. S. Geologic Survey maps listed with United States Geological Survey as the author, and you can see how many people have already listed Ordnance Survey as author, too.

(Although I do suggest, regardless of which field you use, that you specify that it's the British Ordnance Survey, since there are other ones in the world :P )

Yes, use 'Ordnance Survey' (no comma) as the author. Someone had mistakenly set 'Ordnance Survey Great Britain' as the canonical author, which is a wholly inappropriate way of using the field. If your works don't fall into the correct disambiguated version, then they will need to be assigned individually.

If you don't like the idea of calling the OS an author, you can fill in the author field with "Ordnance Survey", set the role to "Other", and fill in "Publisher" when prompted.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Ordnance Survey in the author field it is then. And no matter how irritating it is to other nations I fear that it is just "Ordnance Survey" because that is the official name on the maps. A bit like the oddity that it's only our postage stamps that have no name on them (just the Queen's head). But I'll be sure to use an appropriate geographical tag as well!
