Welcome to the Wizard Challenge, the Hogwarts Express Harry Potter Trivia Thread!

Here's how it works: I'll start us off with a Harry Potter trivia question. Someone will answer it. I'll confirm if they got it correct (or tell everyone to keep guessing if not) and the person with the correct answer will ask the next question. The questions can be as hard or as easy as you like, but keep in mind that there are some die-hard fans around here, just looking for a good challenge! :-) You're on your honor not to use aids like the HP Lexicon, though if a question stands for more than 24 hours, feel free to search the books for an answer.

Without further ado . . . let the Wizard Challenge begin!

Question:

Name all of the members of the Gryffindor Quidditch team in Harry's first year, and list which positions they played.

2Tallulah_Rose
dec 17, 2011, 4:31 pm

Oliver Wood - Keeper
Fred Weasley - Beater
George Weasley - Beater
Angelina Johnson - Chaser
Katie Bell - Chaser
Harry Potter - Seeker

darn, I forgot the 3rd girl. she's a chaser though...

In the fourth book, when he talked to the muggle Prime Minister, Cornelius Fudge told him they were bringing in what for the Tri-Wizard Tournament?

10BuffaloPhil
dec 19, 2011, 6:06 pm

Dragons!

11pollysmith
dec 19, 2011, 6:39 pm

Fudge didn't tell him that, Hagrid did. I think Fudge simply saidHighly dangerous creatures or something like that

12foggidawn
dec 19, 2011, 6:46 pm

In the sixth book, Fudge's interactions with the Muggle Prime Minister in previous years are described. In Harry's fourth year, he told the Muggle Prime Minister that they would be bringing in three dragons and a Sphinx for the triwizard Tournament, I believe. Can't remember if there was anything else.

32pollysmith
feb 9, 2012, 6:00 pm

33foggidawn
feb 9, 2012, 6:14 pm

I'm not sure -- I checked the Lexicon for references to Buckbeak or hippogriffs, thinking that they might link to an original JKR source, but all I could find were references to where he appeared in the books.

34ErisofDiscord
Bewerkt: feb 10, 2012, 12:34 pm

I found out via J.K. Rowling's website, searching the website for hidden content.

I have an idea! Here is one of the names in hangman form, and the first person to figure out what it is get's the next Wizard Challenge. I'll give you guys two letters to start off.

Do you mean who actually saw him and was mentioned or who we guess who probably saw it?
Definitely seen it was by: Harry, Quirrell, Snape, Hermione, Ron, Dumbledore
most likely seen it was by: McGonogall, Sprout, Flitwick, Filch

Thank you, Varielle! The next question is:

Name five instances of Draco Malfoy's cowardice. :)

129varielle
mrt 19, 2012, 6:39 pm

* When he was afraid to go into the forbidden forest
* When he hesitated to kill Dumbledore on the tower (maybe that was a conscience)
* When Harry's patronus charged him his fellow Slytherins when they were masquerading as dementors at the quidditch match
* the several times he ran from Hermione like prior to Buckbeak's execution
* kicking Harry in the face after he petrified him

130ErisofDiscord
mrt 19, 2012, 7:02 pm

I think it was his conscience that stopped him from killing Dumbledore - coward that he is, Draco was no murderer. But the several times that he ran away from Hermione makes up for more than just the fifth instance. The next question is yours, Varielle!

131varielle

He ended up on the school house roof one day, he grew his hair back after Petunia cut it, he talked to the snake at the zoo and accidentally set it on Dudley, he made a wish on his 11th birthday that came true, he became the boy who lived, he could fly on a toy broom in his parent's house. I'm sure there are some more.

that's a nice one! :D

James Potter - A stag
Sirius Black - A big black dog
Peter Pettigrew - A mouse

Rita Skeeter - A Beedle

hm I feel like I'm missing someone, but I'm not sure...

160varielle
mrt 27, 2012, 10:50 am

I think those are the most prominent ones. I always suspected that Dumbledore could do it, but he never let on. :)

161ErisofDiscord
mrt 27, 2012, 11:25 am

Or he never felt it necessary to become an Animagus - like when he told Harry that he had no use for an Invisibility Cloak, because he could make himself invisible with ease. However, if he did decide to become one, I wonder what his animal would be. A phoenix, probably?

162Tallulah_Rose

yes I also alway thought that Dumbledore should be an Animagus.

The Illiad, Emma, The Little White Horse, The Chronicles of Narnia, Macbeth.

217varielle

I think flowers are right, but also a broomstick and a treacle tart.

218Tallulah_Rose
jun 6, 2012, 1:26 am

Fresh mown grass was hermione I think.
The flowery things were 'something he smelled at the Burrow' or so. I think treacle tart is also right, but I'm not sure any more about the broomstick.

219varielle
jun 6, 2012, 8:55 am

DIdn't Hermione also like the smell of toothpaste?

220foggidawn
Bewerkt: jun 6, 2012, 10:03 am

#217 has it correct -- treacle tart, broomstick handle, and something flowery from the burrow (probably Ginny's perfume or shampoo, I always thought).

(For the sake of completeness, Hermione's were freshly-mown grass and new parchment, and something else that she didn't say. I'm thinking maybe JKR later revealed that it was Ron's toothpaste? Maybe? But I don't have time to dig for a source on that right now.)

Take it away, Varielle!
