To Get Works Combined Anyway
Post a request to this thread. Please be sure to include links to each work you want combined.
For example:
For help combining works that would affect fewer than 200 copies, please post to the current "Combining/Separating (Please Fix This Book!) Request Thread". This thread can be found in the Combiners! group with this search (a new thread is created each month to prevent it from becoming cumbersome).
The Problem
You cannot easily combine two works if BOTH works contain a large number of copies (currently the limit is 200 copies). For example, if you try to combine The Dark Tower (having over 6,000 copies) with The Dark Tower Boxed Set (Books 1-4) (having over 500 copies) you will receive this error:
In this case, this error prevents you from combining two works that really should not be combined. However, sometimes it does prevent legitimate combinations. Though the message says only LibraryThing staff may combine these books, that's not entirely true. There are ways to finagle it to combine them, but because of the possibility of harm they aren't really broadcast (but if you know enough to ask...)
As such, the previous thread on this topic ended with LibraryThing members volunteering to combine these "too much love" works for other users.

For example:
Please combine these two works:If it's not obvious that the two works are the same (different title/authors/etc.), it may be helpful if you jot down a few sentences to explain that. But please be sure they really do need to be combined. Keep in mind that different editions with significant textual changes (a original publication versus a later "uncut" version) are treated as different books. Minor changes (like a later version containing a new forward, a new edition with/without illustrations, etc.) do generally belong together in the same work, as do different versions of the same work in different languages.

It seems to me that these two works:
http://www.librarything.com/work/2817510
http://www.librarything.com/work/12352800
are clearly the same one and should be combined. Neither seems to refer to the movie, a common enough problem in this case.
It would be cool if somebody who has the power actually combine the fellows.

I'm getting the "too much love" message for these two works, which appear to be the same:

Would you say the notes and commentary in the Fitzgerald edition aren't extensive enough to warrant a separate work?
(Serious question. I have no idea but just saw that such a difference existed.)
(Serious question. I have no idea but just saw that such a difference existed.)
10spiphany
I don't think so -- I have a copy of this edition, but it's across the Atlantic, so I can't really check in detail, but I don't remember the notes/commentary being any more extensive than is usual for translations of classical works. I think the main reason they didn't end up together is because of the different author attribution.
11brightcopy
Sounds good - done. Looks like it has Fitzgerald already listed as an other author, too.

Somebody emailed me about combining http://www.librarything.com/work/12547264 and http://www.librarything.com/work/1526 - I can do it, but before I do I want to make sure there's not some reason I'm not seeing that they're separate ... anyone?

Well, I note that the 3,000 member one is only for one ISBN: 0140268863. That ISBN shows up in hundreds of copies on the other work. So it seems like a slam dunk.
What's odd is that I never knew the editions were case sensitive. The 3,000 member work is:
The Odyssey / Homer (ISBN 0140268863)
Yet in the 20,000 member work, there's:
the odyssey / homer (ISBN 0140268863)
The odyssey / Homer (ISBN 0140268863)
Everything identical except for case. Not sure I understand why editions shouldn't roll up regardless of case.

Cool. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something. And that is interesting about the cases ... odd.

I've got a pair - as far as I can tell, they're identical. And I combined a few stray editions into the larger of the two, but these two are too large to handle. I don't see any disambiguation notes on either group.

I have two sets as I try to straighten out the editions of the Qur'an.
These three are editions of the N.J Dawood/Penguin translation
http://www.librarything.com/work/12857510
http://www.librarything.com/work/12857514

And these two are the apparently public domain Abdullah 'Usuf Ali translation - and yes, they are basically the same work despite the titles - "translating" the Qur'an is apparently considered impossible by some publishers, but you can render it's "meaning" in another language.

It seems to be a traditional Islamic stance on things, because of the holy status of the book itself. It's only really the Qur'an if the text is in the original Arabic - translations can be useful, but are mere approximation.

Am I right in thinking that two omnibus editions of Shakespeare's plays should be combined if they contain the very same plays, although there may be differences as regards editors, notes, introductions etc.?

Different how - does anyone know? If it's inspired by or a parody of or... those relationships could be entered in the Work Relationships. But as I don't know either Suetonius' book or Grant's, I can't enter it.
32DemetriosX
IIRC (and I might not be), Grant's book is a more modern, scholarly look at the same 12 men covered by Suetonius. Less scandal, more sources (including Suetonius). This is then further complicated by the fact that Grant HAS written an introduction to at least one translation of Suetonius. But these two books definitely aren't the same.

One of those is a different work. I'm trying to separate that book out.
Done. There was also some CK to delete. Why there was Gaiman CK on the Aubrey Brief Lives when I only found a 0 copy edition of Sandman : Brief Lives, I don't quite understand. Could someone familiar with one or the other please check that the CK is now accurate?

A. Merritt and Abraham Merritt are the same writer.
I tried combining them but got "too much love". Help! ;-)
56Nicole_VanK
Currently there is only one A. Merriit left, but that page can - and until fairly recently did - also refer to Allison Merritt. That's why it was split and aliased.
Here's the discussion: http://www.librarything.com/topic/149002#3915172
Since it's very well possible that other books by Allison Merritt may turn up on it in future I think it's probably best to leave it that way.
I'm surprised you get the "too much love" message though. I thought that only applied to work combinations...

Somebody had put bad info in the Series and Canonical Title for 3620553, so I fixed that. They no longer should look like they need any combining. All the editions looks to be in their right place.
ETA: checked more of that user's CK history ... looks like an honest mistake; they're using CT to prevent series info from showing up. But it highlights the potential dangers of those overrides ... man would it have been a mess to separate again. :-)

Assuming the disambiguation notice on
http://www.librarything.com/work/10653395
is correct (I would seriously dispute this, as it assumes that we are all cataloging books, rather than single elements of collections or things we read (or in the case of theater sometimes viewed)), the following two works should be combined:

So yes, there needs to be some separating (gotta run just now or I'd do it), but we need a work-work relationship and a disambiguation notice, not combining.

I would still combine it if it's cataloged with just the title "Breakfast at Tiffany's".
Which is more likely?
a) Someone searched for Breakfast at Tiffany's, found something with that ISBN, then edited the title to reflect what they actually had, or
b) Someone searched for Breakfast at Tiffany's, edited the ISBN to match their copy, but didn't bother to edit the title?
When the title and ISBN disagree, I always go with the title.

* Well, I'm hesitating a little to see if anyone can convince me otherwise.

They're the same book. Deception Point is the english version, Meteor is the German (and some other languages) translation. I got jumpy and started breaking them off before I checked, and now I can't fix it myself *sigh* I fixed all the others, but I couldn't put this one back in.
On a semi-side note, any suggestion on how to deal with that? Should "Meteor" be listed in the CK Other Titles field? I can't find any english name that it was ever sold under, but "Meteor" looks english and totally different from "Deception Point", which is why I messed it up in the first place. To further that, I know all the other things currently combined with "Deception Point" are the same book (I checked) but a lot of them obviously translate to something drastically different than "Deception Point" (i.e. "la conspiracion" translates to neither "Deception Point" or "Meteor" but it's the same work). So should those be put in Other Titles too, or since I use the english site, should they not be since they aren't english?
Feel free to refer me to another thread if there's one on that topic. I'm not much of a forum poster and don't really know where to ask, so here seemed good since I was already typing.

On Alternative Titles, LT's note asks that we "Avoid titles already listed as the Canonical or Original titles as well as foreign-language titles available on the 'Details' tab." Accordingly, Meteor might be used as the Canonical Title on the German site, and Deception Point as the Original Title, but it shouldn't be included as an Alternative Title on the English site.
If you're interested to see more about combining, you might also take a look at http://www.librarything.com/topic/189901 .

It is for all intents and purposes the same book. Sometimes there's Paperback copies that have excerpts from future books too (nearly every Rollins Paperback is like that, either an excerpt or a short story in the Trade Paperback edition) and from what I can see), are we supposed to split everything into it's exact edition now?
The paperback Silent Girl also has a 'contained within' entry that shows Freaks as well.

What's the LT consensus on combining or distinguishing between editions with and without a bonus chapter?
156MarthaJeanne
My opinion is that a chapter from the next book is back of the book advertising that may or may not be there in other copies with the same ISBN. I don't think we have the information to keep them separate.
But in this case it is an extra short story that is mentioned in most of the titles. I wouldn't combine these. Someone entering the contained within information indicates that at least one member sees that as significant.

>163 lorax: I don't about Fisher-Price's "Talk-to-Me-Books," but a general on-line search for "yertle the turtle fisher price talk to me book" yielded this result:
This is a Dr. Seuss "Talk-To-Me" book, which has special sound discs laminated on the book pages. The book requires a #800 "Talk-To-Me" Player, which is a small hand-held battery-operated record player. When children place the player over the discs on the pages it plays sounds and voices of the storybook characters. See http://www.thisoldtoy.com/l_fp_set/toy-pages/0-99/16-book-YertleTheTurtle.html
It seems the key to whether we identify a Talk-to-Me-Book as being distinct from the corresponding original Work turns on whether its "play{ing} sounds and voices of the storybook characters" is more like an adaptation than it is like an audio book. If it's more like an adaptation, we would distinguish; if an audiobook, we combine. Either way, the Yertle the Turtle Talk-to-Me-Book appears to be No. 16 of a {Publisher?} Series -- so there may be more separating, combining and Series work to be done.
Is somebody following this thread familiar enough with Talk-to-Me-Books to advise, or would it profit us to privately ask some Member(s) who have Talk-to-Me-Books cataloged?

(FYI, this came about because this was incorrectly combined with a boxed paperback set of three books. I was able to separate these out with some help from others, and combined what I could back into the standalone title, but now I'm hitting the 200 copy limit on these three.)
Thanks in advance!

There is a section on the work page where you can tell LT which work is connected to the one you are working on -- in the case of omnibi, to connect the individual novel to the omnibus. Not that this anything functionally yet but at least they can be connected so people can see which books are inside of it from the work page :)

Someone separated a large edition from The Time Traveller's Wife: http://www.librarything.com/work/15958382 & http://www.librarything.com/work/3067. Can someone please combine them again? Thanks!

I believe that two entries for Neil Gaiman and Charles Vess's "Stardust" should be merged: http://www.librarything.com/work/13264184/editions/1265369 and http://www.librarything.com/work/16720520/editions
The latter version only contains a single edition which has an ISBN which is already included several times in the former version, and there's no warning note on the latter indicating it is any type of special version which should be kept separate.
Note that the un-illustrated version of "Stardust" has been kept separate (notes as such in the entries) and I think it should remain that way, as the Vess version is extensively illustrated (not just one per chapter or such) and I think that makes it significantly different.

The text is different between the Gaiman and Vess graphic novel and the text-only adaptation of Stardust as well; there is obviously much more visual description in the text-only adaptation that would be unnecessary in the original.

Yes, there seems to be some disagreement within the disambig note for the non-illustrated version (item #3574878). But the notes are there, clarifying what the two versions (item #3574878 and #13264184) are and alerting someone who might think they represent the same thing.
But regardless of that, item #16720520 (a third large entry for "Stardust" with the ISBN of the illustrated version) should be merged into the illustrated version item #13264184 as I mentioned in post #185, if someone is willing to take care of that.

Great, thanks.

I think these two should be combined, for all editions that contain all of Shakespeare's poems:

You;re suggesting someone should remove the editions that don't explicitly say they're the non-narrative poems and combine with the sonnets and poems?
195drnqs
Actually, I'm confused now. I just don't think there's a distinction in terms of content between the editions with the word "narrative" in the title and the others - they all contain all of Shakespeare's non-dramatic poetry. The idea was to simply combine the two works (without excluding any editions).
