Announcing the February ReadaThing (plus Dickens of a ReadaThing!)

Apologies. I'm late announcing this. RL gets in the way of reading and readathings.

This time, we are joining the ReadaThing to the 200th Birthday of Charles Dickens on 7 February. It is not required to read CD, but those who wish to join a Dickens group for this are welcomed. There are other groups on LT who are already reading CD for his birthday! (Please post links in this thread)

The 'Official' ReadaThing Dates are February 2nd to February 10th, depending on your location. It is a full week for those who wanted a longer ReadaThing.

The February ReadaThing begins at 1PM Friday, February 3rd in New Zealand, 11AM Friday in Eastern Australia, Midnight Thursday in the UK, 7PM Thursday, February 2nd in the Eastern US, 4PM Thursday in the Western US, and 2PM Thursday in Hawaii!!

If you want to join in the read, but aren't sure WHEN you can read, or can't plan, there is the "No Timeline" readers signup on the wikipage after the timeline.

What is ReadaThing?

ReadaThing is NOT a read-a-thon!! You do not have to read for the entire week unless you want to! ReadaThing is a time when we gather to read & share what we read. The best analogy I can offer is that RaT is like a relay race where runner hand a baton off to the next runner. Some of the readers sign up for specific reading times & some don't, but there is always someone in the group reading somewhere in the world.

There are three major threads for the ReadaThing: the announcement/information thread, the "what I will/may be reading" thread, the Log Book & reviews thread, and the Quote thread. There will also be a "Dickens of a ReadaThing" thread for those who want to read a Dickens book or books! (They are are very very good, too!)

There is a wikipage for the signups. There will not be a wikipage for the books. It will be replaced by the "what I will/may be reading" thread.

After the timeline on the wiki-signup page, there are two areas where you can signup for the "No Timeline" readers or for the "Dickens Readers".

One week until the Week-Long Dickens of a ReadaThing officially starts!!

Don't forget to signup for any times that you want. More than one person can read during any hour timeslot. Yes, we'd like to see every timeslot filled, but we can hope.

If you want to read along, but can't commit to a timeslot, or know that you'll read more than just your timeslots, signup in the "No Timeline Readers"!

And if you are reading Dickens, sign in the "Dickens Readers"! I'm going to listen to Dickens' A Tale of Two Cities, but it is still reading!! I just need to finish some needlework, too.

I can hardly wait! Dickens is my favorite classic author. It all started with Bleak House which I will be reading during my time slot to honor such a great author. I also love that his birthday is only 5 days away from my own. I feel in him a kindred spirit!

Just a couple of questions before you go:

**Was the weeklong RT too long, too short, or just right?

**Should the next RT be in April (in three months) or in May (four months)?

The time worked fine - though as usual, when there's a RaT on, I was frantically busy so I didn't get much reading in. But with a week to manage it, I did get in some, at least.

Either one, doesn't matter. Just not over Memorial Day weekend, please.

Why not? I may or may not comply - if it's an interesting theme, I might post about how my books fit it even though they don't (it's fun finding connections) - couldn't manage that this time, no Dickens in medieval romances. But sometimes a theme triggers ideas, so I see no reason why not. Actually, this time there was the main thread and the Dickens thread - that was rather neat, I think. Though there might be a lot more overlap on a broader theme (and therefore more trouble for people to post in two threads).

Time ok, good to give folks latitude.

Since I think YA js "for young people and intelligent adults" that would be a wise choice.

Malcolm Bosse "The 79 Squares" and Peter Dickinson "Tulku" come instantly to mind.

I thought the time frame was fine.
Four months for the next one would be better, I think.
I like the theme idea: gives a focus and you might branch out to a new area of reading.

Time frame was good; much more comfy than the 2-3 day ones.
Either three or four months is cool!
I also like the theme idea.

I liked the week-long time frame -- much easier to fit in some time slots.
I would prefer four months from now for the next one.
I like the idea of a non-mandatory theme -- it's fun to compare what everyone puts into that category.

It was just right, let's have it ASAP and I love a good, non-compulsory theme. :)

I loved having a whole week and for me it's never too soon for another one! I'm ok with a non-mandatory theme.

It depends on the theme but I go more for a non-mandatory theme. It could also be like this time, one theme but nobody has to feel it as an obligation rather to join it if you like it.

skittles: Thanks a lot :-) for all your organizing. I know it will always take you a lot of time and we are aloud just to join in.

Thanks again for a wonderful readathing. I just wish I had more time to participate in it. I did enjoy it being a week long cause I was able to read for a little bit each night.

Theme I really don't care if there is one. If I don't have anything that fits into it I still join in just because I love to read.

I liked the length of time we had to read.

April sounds good to me but I would gladly participate in May as well.

I love themes even though I did not stick with the theme this time.

I thought the Readathing was just right.

I vote for April (the sooner the better) but I'm ok with May too.

As long as it's non-compulsory, I like the idea of a themed Readathing.

OK, this is (hopefully) how it will go:

It will be a week. I'm not sure what week yet, but I'll make it a week-long ReadaThing. It will most likely be April, but I'm not making promises.

A non-compulsory theme, similar to the Dickens Readers, with an additional thread for that theme. Feel free to make suggestions, either here or by PMing me on my profile page.
