A letter in The Times prompted me to look out for a 92 year old Douglas Wilmer playing the part of an aged member of the Diogenes Club, horrified by Watson asking (out loud!) for Mycroft, in the last of the current series of Mark Gatiss's Sherlock. I had completely forgotten that Wilmer was the BBC's Holmes in the 1960's (and also played the part in Gene Wilder's The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes Smarter Brother) but the face was instantly recognisable. You can see a picture here:

I am continuing to enjoy the Moffat/Gatiss series greatly - I hope Martin Freeman's excursion to Hobbiton won't get in the way of further episodes.

i will have to remember to keep an eye out for him. here in The States we will not see the latest episodes until March (... come on March!).
i really like these new interpretations of the canon, even more than i HATE the new 'Holmes as Batman/Rambo' movies, which is quite a lot! let's hope they continue to produce them at a high and witty level.

A very nice touch that Cameo. I have the BBC Wilmer Holmes DVD set (Oddly put out in the US but not the U.K.).

It was tweeted there will be a season 3 of Sherlock, but no filming dates given..

Oh, I can't wait to see that (not having TV, I wait for DVDs to come out).

I got recently the Wilmer Holmes series; I like his Holmes very much. What a GREAT face, asymmetrical, strong, and so quick and mobile! Nigel Stock as Watson is excellent too. Interesting that he played Watson for Cushing's Holmes too. That's next on my "to get" list.
